General questions to the group I'd like to know thoughts on what everyone believes are the rarest Toyota FJ Cruiser accessories or options. I'm asking for thoughts on North America and International FJ Cruisers. Please stick to the factory offerings.

I'm thinking... FJ Cruiser TRD ‘08 Trail Teams Edition Rear Skid Plate (PT212-35073). These were not offered on any other year to my knowledge and came in two options 1) first hitch & 2) without hitch.

This was inspired by an article I just found on my Google feed regarding the Pontiac Aztec Tent. I Just Bought A Pontiac Aztek Tent, The Holy Grail Of Car Accessories. Here's What It Comes With - The Autopian

Let's hear your thoughts.

Where did you find information indicating that the rear skid plate was available in two different versions or 'options'?

Are you confusing the aluminum rear skid plate with the plastic rear bumper valance, which WAS available in two different versions, one for vehicles with the OEM hitch and one for vehicles without the hitch.

I believe there is only one rear skid plate, with the Toyota PN you mentioned above.

I installed one on my '14 FJC, the writeup is here:
https://www.fjcruiserforums.com/thr...stallation-of-oem-toyota-aluminum-rear-skid-plate-on-14-fj.392017/#post-5563065

Unfortunately the jackals at Photobucket vandalized the photos during their extortion scheme ... at some point I'll see if I can find the original photos and replace the vandalized ones.

Not confusing the parts, but could be mistaken on the non-hitch rear skid plate. I have the hitch version of the skid on my rig having bought it a few years back. Could have sworn it was available both ways. None the less I have only seen mine in person.

Any other thoughts on the rarest accessories or options?

Wasn't there an onboard air compressor somewhere? I would like to see pictures of the Chile Winch.

It is worth noting that pretty much all of these dealer (or factory) accessories have superior aftermarket alternatives:
  • air compressor
  • GPS
  • back up camera & display
  • audio
  • first aid kit
  • etc.

Not really worth trying to find in the wild, if interested in performance.
Some of the dealer installed, and port installed options are, as noted by others above, regional, making them not really "Toyota" accessories, but low cost, high bling profit makers for sales. Worth having for your Pebble Beach concours competition but inferior to what you could come up with on your own via aftermarket options (quite the opposite from the usual narrative about OEM Toyota parts, which these are not).

Whole heartedly agree. Sometimes the rarity is worth it and sometimes not. Like GPS unit that is clearly out of date and easily identified as Garmin aftermarket for dealer add-ons. Yet it would still be neat to have as a collectable.

Could not find a database here of these things or part numbers. Figured it was a good conversation to have while we still had long time owners that had the knowledge. Kinda wish I had focused more on mine in the early years but coaching youth sports took priority. Now all the memories built up in my FJC related to raising my son make it more special and I'm trying to get the things I'd truly want for it.

6mt is a production line option that is pretty rare

There were three:
  • Factory (installed on the assembly line), "OEM"
  • Port Installed (installed at a distribution center, either on their end, or usually on our end, anyway prior shipping to the dealer), "PIO"
  • Dealer Installed, "DIO"
Now there are four:
Recently there have begun to be "ILA" options, now too: inline installed accessories, to reduce the installation cost below PIO or DIO.

In all cases, these are aftermarket sourced parts, not developed by Toyota. They are checked by a department in sales, but are not required to meet the normal Toyota requirements, to keep their cost competitive with the existing aftermarket options and are ideally using suppliers already well established in that particular market (OME, ARB, Go Rhino, Rigid, Bilstein, Reese, Pelican, etc.). Sometimes with the "TRD" name added to them.

I would be interesting to see a list of options available for the different markets- for example, the JDM stuff and the equipment listed as accessories for the Middle East, Australia. and South Asia markets. I know in the USA there was some more 'off road' oriented equipment available from dealers at 1 point, but I don't remember who the supplier was.

I saw an option for a heated front windshield for a JDM FJ while poking around looking for the JDM fender flares. (I think it was OEM, but don't really remember)
My first thought was...WANT! No more wipers frozen to the glass!!
My second thought 1⅝ seconds later was...Meh. It's only going to get cracked.

As owner of 2008 TTSE (early 2008 production), my opinion is this model had most options available for any given year.
As the economy downturned year 2008 and beyond, TMS scaled back available options for any FJ trim level.

Regarding rear skid plate: Mine came from factory as OEM aluminum non-towing package model.

The difference between tow and non-tow is:
1) no tow wiring (part of OEM tow kit)
2) no bracket to support flat 4 pin wiring
My belief is same part #, however port installation discarded any unneeded parts.

I am still look for the bracket after 10+ years: Last Thread

I seem to remember having getting one with mine. I tossed it because it was pretty worthless for what I do for fun. I added a huge kit with tons of 4-bys, cling, and fabric bandaids, and skin glue, quik-clot, etc... Cyclist/crash test dummy. I did almost buy a 'mass casualty kit', but it had too much stuff I'd never use and for that was too expensive. MOST 'first aid kits' for sale are useless for anything more than a paper cut, and then don't have the right stuff for worse, genrally. I'd rather build my own.

6 speed manual?

I can't recall if I saw this at FJ Summit 2008 or a local group run around that time, but there was an FJ that didn't have the dimpled texture on the dashboard. The owner didn't spec it out like that but he said it just came that way.

How rare are the 5 spoke, 16 inch aluminum wheels that came with mine? I think that maybe Ive seen one other set.

I agree the 2008 TT came with the most standard equipment. It had front and rear skid plates, rock rails, bumper aux lights, aluminum shift knobs, TRD exhaust, cyclone precleaner, TRD wheels, Bilsteins, BFG's, as well as all the off road package stuff. It was also the first FJ that could use the atrac with the locker.
I drilled new holes in the rear skid to make it stick out about an inch for more protection and it saved my rear bumper on Hells Revenge.

I do remember that was one thing that the dealer said, the older models had more standard Optional goodies in the TT package, and that it lost options package goodies year over year. Like I see what looks like possible mounts for a skid plate aft of the engine, but it wasn't included. I doubt that it has the rear skid plate too (and would have to look if it has the front plate), and came with a standard exhaust, no 'Cat Back' stainless for this one which I had heard was part of the TT package at one point.
