Upgrading JBL head unit

Morning from NorCal. I want to upgrade the head unit on my fj. I’m thinking a double din with apple car play. My question is, I have the really cool although useless rear display on the mirror and wondering if there are any specific head units that can run both? So basically when I put it in reverse it’ll show the live on the head unit as well as the mirror. Thanks! This is what I have now.

Good question!
My '08 didn't come with the little inner mirror backup camera display (2.4" from '09, 3.3" from '13), and have liked having the large double din display ever since installing a modern navigation head unit. To also keep the I/Mirror display would mean having two cameras, most likely.

In most cases, installing an aftermarket HU means installing its dedicated camera, as the tech has changed by leaps and bounds over the years making them rarely backwards compatible.
Also, in the case of the OEM camera, its connectors were proprietary (not the mini USB which aftermarket cameras have typically used). In that case, most of the time folks replace the OEM camera with the new one, and run a new shielded wire to it, as well.

Perhaps you could install a modern HU, and install its camera someplace out back, and leave the I/M system alone, in order to use both side by side?

Note that the JBL Head unit does not have an amplifier in it. The line level signals are sent by shielded cable to the subwoofer box in the rear cargo area, where there is a multi channel amp and those signals are then sent to the 6 speaker locations (dash, door and D-pillars). That amp cannot be turned on without special digital communication from the JBL HU.

So, if you change the JBL system be sure to get a Metra controller box (Crutchfield is a good source for all this stuff as they have got great after sales tech support) to be able to turn on the JBL amp in the sub with your new HU.

good info. Didn’t even consider the sub and amp since I don’t plan on upgrading speakers or sub.

Worst case you could add a second camera back there for the headunit.

I was going to use it as a front camera when I put an Alpine in, but came to find the camera that came with the unit was reversed image (for backup cam). I ended up putting it facing back at the front of my front tires, and another for a front cam.
