I have a FJ and 92 4runner and actually this question is about a winch that i put into the 4runner.
I purchased a cheapo chicago electric 8000 pound winch (harbor fright) and installed the guy over the weekend. I mounted the control box in the car and the winch outside due to numerous people complaining how the control box is not water proof.
i managed to put a 60 amp fuse for the power but the fuse blew as soon as i put some load against it. after reading the box the 4.1 HP winch uses up to 280 amps. Does most winch have a fuse built in or is there another solution that i can use to actually "protect" the electrical system.
the reason i want a fuse in there is i ran the 4 gauge cables under the car on top of the frame, i'm just afraid that if i go through some stuff it might rip apart the wire and short circuit. i don't want a fire.
any advise would be awesome for this newbie.
