I like it the way it is...I remember hearing about one guy who had subs in the back of his FJ and gear, the thieves broke the rear window trying to get in, set off the alarm, didn't have time to go AROUND to actually get in the vehicle to steal the stuff.

 

Good idea, I am asuming you tied into the latch with a rod of some sort. Very cool!

Silly, question... Will this open the door even if it is "locked" and not able to be opened from the outside?

I've been pondering just such a mod since I have been looking at the rear compartment as a sleeping area recently. This looks pretty clean. I was picturing having to attach a cable with a ball toggle to pull.

Actually the opening motion is downward so the cable pull wouldn't work unless you accessed from below or fabbed a rocker pivot.

Someone asked if this will open the door if the door is locked. I am not sure of the answer, but if it will not you can add a switch to the back door as outlined in a thread by WESAYSO. The switch connects to the circuit that the key opperates from the back door. THis way you can pop the locks then open the door, all from inside the back door.

 

This is exactly correct. The door DOES have to be in the unlocked condition. And wesayso's switch is the way I went.

Great idea. I needed it about 4 months ago. I have a fifth wheel that I carry the FJ in. I got it loaded but had to close the back door. I normally leave the window open, but somehow it closed. I spent about an hour in the truck waiting for the wife to finally come looking for me. Duh. This will be done over the weekend.

I did sonof40's back door mod over the weekend. I used a threaded rod instead of the aluminum rod to save myself the step of threading. The black cap is from OSH, threads matched to the rod. I covered the visible part of the rod with black shrink tubing to make it look pretty. Instead of using sonof40's fancy clamps to secure the rod to the door release arm, I used 2 small hose clamps with a length of wood dowel alongside the two rods to give a tighter fit. I also added a loop of nylon webbing screwed down by the upper left corner cover screw to make a nice door pull. It all works great! :thinkerg:

To anyone worried about security w/ this mod: When the door is locked, you cannot open the door with the inside release any more than you could with the outside release.

You know, I absolutely love my FJ, but there are a few inexcusable items that bug the heck out of me - having to pay extra for a passenger armrest, no map light, and no back door release from the inside. At least they fixed the sunvisor issue. That being said, theres not another 4x4 Id rather own.

I will show my ignorance, Is there any way to unlock the back door from inside in a dead battery situation ? Or is it best to spend time on a different mod and just climb out the front ?

 

If the doors are locked and the battery dies, you won't be able to exit with this mod release. I say do the mod anyway because it's very useful and climbing out the front is a pain in the @$$!

 

I am all for the mod, it is bad a$$. A LED in the release knob for a little bling would put it over the top !

 

I finally got around to doing a combo of the "manual rear door unlock" and the "rear window unlatch". These mods are both worth the time. I gotta say thanks to "sonof40" for the great instructions on the manual rear door unlock and "wesayso" for the great rear window unlatch instructions.

All went just like the posted instructions, but because I believe in looking before I leap, I spent time digging through the electrical manual to make sure that I understood where the switch would actually connect in the window schematics.

I did this a few weeks ago. I also built a rack for the rear door that was posted a while back. Used the pieces of shelving rails. I have several MOLLE packs attached to these.
