Anyone here running a full 102" whip on your Bandi mount? Just curious.

Bwaaa haaaa Haaaa!!!

 I'll blame it all on you and the train tracks.

I don't think that the Bandi mount would hold up to a full 102" whip and spring mount, as it's only held on to the door hinge with a single small screw (the flexing would most likely stress the screw and snap it, eventually). JMO...
I thought the same thing, but we'll see -- seems to be holding since yesterday with a little bit of highway abuse. If it does take a dive, I'll work from there.

I thought about using a base-loaded smaller whip, but I had to give it a shot. After all, it's not every day you see a big radio-controlled-looking-FJ.

i am not, but i am sure the bandi mount would hold it. you might need to drill another bolt hole to support it, otherwise it would work, as long as you don't mind the tip banging off the trees. that is why i went with a 2 foot stick and replaced my front one with a short rubber duckie.. hope this helps..

I'm not going to run a full whip, but am planning on running a 48" stainless steel whip (probably a Wilson or K40).

I've tried Firestiks, and am not impressed with their tuneability. However, the 3' whip I'm running now tunes very nicely (just doesn't get out a well as a longer whip).

I've been using a 102 whip on the bandi mount with no problems for about 8 months now. I had a friend make a 6" extension and I also put in a quick disconnect. no problems to date. when not in use, (which is most of the time) it's zipped tied to my stock roof rack, still connected. The bandi mount will handle it!

I use the radio Shack 64 inch whip w Walcot heavy duty mount and spring. No probs. The 102 would be awfully long.

That's one big antenna you're putting on the FJ!:rocker:

Are we going to see if we can break that one off this weekend! :mecry:

I think that's over 8ft. tall, and it looks like a radio tower!:rocker:

Thats the same CB I got. the Galaxy 959. With slightly modified internals and a 6" extension, I can skip inter-island. Only on a clear day and facing that direction tho. No pills of any sort. Thats over 100 miles. What ever they did to my 959, they did a great job on it!

Yes!!!!!! I love that radio!

It used to be in my FJ till I put the Uniden PC78LTW back in for weather capability. Now it's my base comms!

Toytaco: I picked up a solid aluminum extension today. I was previously using the same quick-disconnect and spring, but the SWR's aren't low enough and it needs to be lengthened. I'm going to try the same setup you've got there with the solid extension on top of the quick disconnect, then the antenna.

102 inches = 8.5 feet (whip size)

If you don't want the whip to move when using a spring then secure a piece of clear mono-filament to your roof rack and to the whip - it shouldn't move very much then!

I know the whip size!

What I really should do is measure what it is from the road being mounted on the BANDI, with the quick disconnect, extension and spring!

The SWR's were fixed by the extension. As I said in another thread, you've gotta take into account the reflection against the vehicle and stock roof rack. I was getting SWR's of 2.2-3.0 and with the extension (bringing it up higher) it's now 1.1-1.4. :bigthumb:

As far as keeping it pulled over forward -- keep in mind that cranks the SWR back up. It's about 1.9 or so maximum with mine pulled forward. I use a mini bungie tie that I've got with the end bent inwards more to wrap around the tip of the antenna and the other side just goes around the roof rack. Works great to unhook it quick when we go through those unruly, low-flying-tree-laden trails here in scrub Florida. It's getting a bit dark right now, but I'll get some pictures of what I mean soon.
