Those antenna grommets only seem to last about 10 years. So many FJs that I see have a deteriorated antenna grommet even though it is easy to replace.

In the video he used a 7mm wrench (held backwards) to remove the antenna. Toyota included the antenna wrench tool in the glove box with the FJ when it was new so that you could easily remove the antenna when going through a car wash or to prevent damage when off-roading. If you've lost your original antenna tool, it is Toyota part no: 863A2-0C010.

 

Its today that i learned people do more than finger tight on antennas. Learn something new all the time haha

 

Amazon says that it doesn't fit my 2010 FJ. Do the older fjs have a different antenna size or is Amazon lying?

Same for all model years. The cowl and the antenna were not changed during production.

 

They should just change their name to "Chinazon". Most of what they push is junk stuff made in China. You really have to hunt for a name brand item or else perform a focused search, because they usually bury it in their search function.

 

Yeah, I've run into a lot of things I know will fit my cars, but Amazon complains they don't fit. Go to a Toyota online parts site and order a grommet from them.

 

My antenna mast kept loosening up over time, once just caught it before it fell out completely. Threw some loctite red on it. The blue didn't hold well enough for some reason, and I even cleaned the two ends. Yes, that 'ornament' is pop-off/pop-on easy. The metal trim piece is a real PITA!

Wished I had this presence of mind the first time I ran mine through a car wash. Snapped like a twig. Didn't even think about it until right as I saw the brush coming in. Went with a shorty after that as I don't really listen to AM/FM anyway. Wish I could find a decent looking delete kit, but most just look uglier than a low profile antenna.

To totally delete the antenna you could take off that little outboard cowl top panel and have a body shop weld it closed and repaint it to match (while they are doing that, unbolt and remove the portion that sticks through, unplugging it from inside, behind the kick panel trim below the dash)

 

Antenna delete I was thinking the same thing last night while looking at my 1967 C10's cowl panel. Eastwood makes different size metal weld in hole plugs. A 10 pack is 6 buck$. Eastwood sheet metal plug hole patch kit
