Cruise Control Sucks!!

Has anyone else noticed that their cruise control seems to cause a downshift on the slightest incline. It seems as if the FJ looses 1 mph the cruise goes ape sh!t and immediately downshifts. :flame: This sucks because it is constantly downshifting and gets very annoying. Does anyone know if the tolerance is adjustable?

BTW, before someone sh!ts in my hat I did a search and found nothing. :fart:

Should have bought a MT...my cruise countrol has yet to learn how to engage my clutch and downshift for me.:) How's that for sh!ting in your hat?

TonkaJ, I also notice that as well. I went on a road trip to Orlando with the cruise control on most of the time and on the way back I drove normally. I got better milage not using the cruise control. The constant downshifting was the cause of this.

Are there gently rolling hills where your at or is it generally flat?
I have driven 9k miles up and down california...some flat, some rolling hills, some steep grades. My last three vehicles were Toyotas so maybe I don't know it any other way. On step grades in downshifts and stays there (I believe part of the "smart" auto tranny system) which i think is much better then it snapping in and out like the older models did. Honestly haven't noticed anything on the rolling hills but will pay closer attention next weekend ;)

You know your right, I should have thought of that. What is that I smell, sh!t in my hat or your clutch? Hmmm...:fart:
That smell is still $hit in your hat...my clutch is working perfectly (just like the other 99.9% of MT FJs on the road).

Cruise Control works great with a MT;)
Ditto here. But these AT guys don't want to hear that...it makes them sad & mad at the same time. But, to compensate, there is nothing like throwing out some ill-will toward the future of all us MT owners and our clutches. Good times.

No problems here in the mountains of east Tennessee with my AT. Try bumping your shifter into 4th gear next time if you are going up a big incline.

These MT guys think that just because you have an automatic tranny, that you can't shift it on your own. But alas, you can! And you don't even have to push a clutch in to do it. This is why they made a gated shifter. That way you don't even have to look at it and it's harder to slip up and pick a gear too low for your speed.

I have an auto and the cruise works fine. Much better than the first T100s- slightest incline and the cruise shut off...

I have to agree with MissFJ...the CC in my AT works just fine. As a matter of fact, I just noticed today how much better the FJ is at NOT downshifting for the slightest hill or draft than my previous POS. Maybe you guys need to bring your FJ in to the dealer for a look at a possible problem.

Maybe they could put in an AT for you and make things all better:stickpoke: ...JK...I just had to do it!!

Not run out into the line of fire here, but I have an AT and have complained to my friend about the way too aggressive cruise control. I have experienced the double down shift of death, all the way to third at 75 MPH and that really makes the vehicle hard to control as the engine practically redlines. It was a pain in the arse on the way to Colorado from Texas. I plan to let the dealer diagnose it when I take it in for my next service, maybe they can do something. By the way, go 60 MPH and all is well, go 70-80 MPH and you will have this problem. The root cause is, the FJ is a brick and higher speeds are harder to maintain. In fact, I feel the cruise control/tranny is not smart enough. Lay of the gas and the issue is less noticeable, if at all.

When did any MT guy state that an AT can't be changed into a different gear? Believe it or not, I think the VAST majority of drivers (both MT & AT) can grasp the very complicated operation of shifting an AT.

And 1983FJ60 nailed it perfectly...if you're looking down to shift (both MT or AT) you are nothing but a hazard to yourself & everyone else on the road.

Originally, I was just joking around, now I just don't want to turn this into a MT vs. AT thread (I already know what's best...so I don't care to justify it to anyone). To get back on topic, I don't really think there is a problem with the FJ (obviously I have not driven it, so I might be wrong); there are just too many factors in this question to give an accurate response.

Depending on the terrain and speed you're operating will obviously play a big part in this CC shifting. If you're operating at the threshold of a 4th & 5th gear change for the speed and terrain, the CC is going to shift back & forth. If that's the case, I think the previous post about just shifting the FJ into 4th for the time being would probably be the best solution to avoid over working the poor tranny. Yes, even AT guys sometimes have to do a little work when they drive (or not, and just keep beating the crap out of the equipment).

I've not had any problems and i've used it up and down mountains.....i generally just knock it into 4th tho..(A/T)...i love cruise :D

What's being described is a common, irritating, annoying hunt AT Toyos have at certain conditions.

My 4Runner hunted somewhere around 40mph between 3rd and 4th that I almost forced myself to speed so I wouldn't have to drive at that speed.

On the highway it just had one gear, 4th, but since the FJC is a 5 speed you're probably seeing another version of this at higher speeds.

I ran back and forth across the mountains of western NC, eastern TN on the way from NC to AR and back, and the CC worked great the whole way. I ran it 75-80 just about the whole time with no problems at all, very smooth.

I agree, I think the cruise works very well. I have an AT and have no complaints, I actually was driving down HWY 181 last week and loved the way the artificial inteligence downshifts and holds the gear, very similar to how i would drive it with a clutch. Maybe that artificial intelligence has something to do with the upshifting too

I went from Souther Indiana to Western Idaho and back in my AT and as we started to approach anything steeper than an Nebraska hill (read speed bump) and the FJ would d/s hard and gun it. If I turned the CC off I could maintain speed with no d/s on worse hills than the CC d/s on. Definatly had better milage with CC off in even remotely hilly places. Seems as though some ppl have had better luck than others...maybe some had bad programming?

I've had cruise control in the current generation Ford F-150s (V6; small V8 and larger V8) each with hundreds of thousands of miles.
The ability of each control to regulate engine speed on any incline was directly proportional to the amount of power required to crest that incline. (in my experience).
Guess which version hummed along and never so much as barked until the going got tough...and which hunted all the time?
Some of us complain about the gas mileage on these things; yet don't stop to think about the fact that they just don't lightly free-wheel down the road with 17's as you might expect a much smaller/lighter/more aerodynamic rig would.
