Ha i am an ASE master mechanic and a senior Lexus tech and i took one look at the Viper 5902 system an said screw this. I just got done installing the AVIC navi unit and that wasnt too bad took me 4 hours. I really dont feel like stressing myself out for 10 hours getting this thing done.... so yeah im opting to have Best buy do it for a couple hundred. In this case id happily pay 200 bucks to save myself that headache.

I have that system from watching them install it, I am glad I let em do it. I installed all the speakers and such but that alarm was complicated.

yeah it is a bit complicated and tedious. its just not worth the head ache and these guys do this every day and have access to good recommended wiring spots and such through places like dei, its just alot easier for them and they will prolly do a better job than me

I have a 200 lb very protective Great Dane that would make a good alarm.

#7 ·
haha yep we have 3 Great Danes at about 150-175 each.. lets just say no one comes near our backyard!

But yes I am in the same boat as I want a remote start for christmas but I do not want to do it myself nor do I want to pay someone $200 to "touch my women"!!

yeah that makes me feel better... Viper made damn sure to make it as hard as possible unless you are a dealer or authorized installer.... without access to their information like the dei site it is difficult

#10 ·
nope, did my own alarm. Mainly because it's a manual transmission. ANd yes, it is a pain in the butt if you don't install alarms.

If you are interested in installing an alarm yourself but are a little intimidated by the prospect, may I recommend Autoalarmpro.com. I have installed 2 systems from them. The latest one was for my FJ and supported smartphone control. What makes this company different is that they give you specific instructions for your car ( to the level of " install the pink wire to the black with yellow trace at location "X" on connector "Y") This makes it pretty darn straightforward. And the one or two times that I needed clarification, the answer was just a phone call away. Just a thought...:bigthumb:

Ill look into that, access to something like that might motivate me to do it myself although the installation is only 200 bucks and ive kind of mentally accepted it

#13 ·
well they dont offer the viper 5902 and ive already purchased it so i guess im out of luck

#14 ·
Well Best Buy installed it for 215 bucks and it was money well spent the guy did a great job and the install was clean.... best 200 bucks i ever spent. Walking outside and seeing that blue viper plate flashing is completely bad ass, not to mention i will be getting into a warm car via remote start. This upgrade has to be one of my favorites so far. Plus i feel alot less paranoid about people breaking into it and stealing my gun and 800 dollar head unit

Trust me, your much better off letting Best Buy do it so if any problems come up you can just take it back & let them fix it. If you do it yourself, your on your own. That's just me, I'm not real good with the wire's & stuff. Good Luck with it. I could not live without my remote starter.

so i'm getting the viper 5701 installed next week and i want to make sure that i'm not over paying.

maybe i just didn't understand the shop, but they said that i need to get a bypass in addition to the alarm/remote start because of the car i have.

so the question is, is the bypass just because it's an fj, or is it a chipped key thing?? (i have the '07 which doesn't have the chipped key)So the bypass is to trick the remote start/FJ into thinking my key is there?? Or is it tricking it into thinking that a CHIPPED key is there.

did that make sense??

Yeah he tried to tell me the same thing.... told him that it didnt have an immobilizer chip and he said i still needed it i basically had to punk him bc he didnt believe me that a 2007 didnt have an immobilizer.

Your vehicle doesnt need a bypass. Also request a ball bearing style hood switch instead of the cheap switch with the kit..... the contacts wear out fast on those and are not reliable.

I really love my 5902 remote i would seriously consider the upgrade to the better remote or 5902 system. First of all it is just cool, but there are a ton of uses with it and i am more aware of what is going on with that remote

incorrect........ unnescessary on my 2007

#19 ·
also he had issues with my remote start and it would not always catch so i brought it back and he hooked it up directly to the tach input and it fixed it

#21 ·
no chip in our keys

#23 ·
which is what i thought.

i went in today and the guy said that even though there is no chip i still need the bypass. i am hoping that it's just the guy who happened to be in the electronics section at best buy not knowing, vs them trying to scam me for $100. :-\

so i need to go back there tomorrow is what i'm hearing. haha.

#24 ·
no you do not need the bypass...... all you have to do is say "Ok so my key doesnt have a chip so why would it need a bypass module..... what is there to bypass?"

#26 ·
wow that is the most ridiculous thing ive ever heard.... you are tapping directly into the wiring of the ignition... that is how the car is started

take it from me a guy that has already purchased his alarm and had it installed, i payed extra for the hood switch and a viper illuminescant indicator and that was it

#28 ·
Made the installer explain what exactly was being bypassed. Couldn't do it, then it turned into "It was probably sold as a suggestion". Haha. Returned it and saved $130!! Also, the manager pushed my install from next Friday to tonight. So I'll be picking it up in a few hours.

That is a win for the forum!! Thanks for the help Surratt!!

Ha.... bet that made for an awkward moment! Your going to love it, there may be a couple of kinks to be worked out like the ones i mentioned but wow i love my system. I really love my little indicator i got installed too. Only 20 bucks you might want to think about it.

You thought about getting the smart start? I thought it was so cool at first but it requires a subscription and i really dont see myself ever using it unless im showing it off to my friends. One cool thing is you can be in touch and aware of whats going on with your alarm from anywhere you have a phone signal. But 99 percent of the time im within a mile of my car.

#32 ·
yeah the flashing viper pad you can buy separately..... i get compliments on that alot. I kept a gun in the FJ and also have a 900 dollar head unit so the alarm system was nescessary for me to feel at ease.

#34 ·
yeah yours should have the imobilizer chip in the key. Ours was a 2007 so its just a key shank basically. Also i have both remotes and id say that remote is worth a 100 extra bucks, keeps me much more in tune with the car and it just looks cool

#35 · (Edited)
yes any vehicle that uses an immobilizer system with the key needs the bypass
