Hello everyone on here. My wife and I had purchased a 2008 FJ with 140,000 out of state awhile back. We were thrilled to have this type of unique car. Well unfortunately things broke down almost immediately. Driver lock actuator, MAP sensor, rear lock actuator, driver seat belt, passenger window button not functional. Things just kept falling apart almost every month there was something. My wife was immediately regretting this purchase because it was a car for her. I tried to stay optimistic. I noticed certain things looked like they were already replaced and left uncovered. Still staying optimistic until my wife finally made the decision “I’m getting rid of this FJ.” Sad I was but okay let’s see what we can get for it. We did the Autonation appraisal (we know we weren’t gonna get much from a dealer but just testing the waters) and they told us $4,000. FOUR THOUSAND?!? for an FJ with 140,000 miles? The salesman showed us the carfax and that this FJ actually has 360,000+ miles in 2019 and that the odometer was changed to 130,000 something. And this is the reason why it was only worth $4,000. the previous owner showed us a carfax when we looked at the car but i guess it was a fake. we're bummed the hell out. we have absolutely no confidence on this vehicle this was supposed to be a car that we CAN take it to 400,000 miles, a family car that we can take to long distances. so how do we go about selling a car that has fake miles but it wasnt because of us???

You're in a difficult situation, but first thing to do is to independently confirm Autonation's 360K mileage claim (run your own Carfax). There is always the possibility that someone at Autonation made an error entering the VIN, and the 360K miles is on a different FJC.

If the 360K mileage IS correct, it's unfortunate, but you got where you are because of a lack of diligence. Accepting an alleged 'Carfax' from a private party seller without independently verifying the data was clearly a major mistake.

Regardless, you might have some legal recourse IF you retained a copy of the fraudulent Carfax, the Bill of Sale, or any other document provided by the seller that fraudulently presented the mileage as 140K vs the true 360K.

Well I wonder which one was lying. If the fj runs good and looks OK it's worth more. They all under cut prices. Paid 16,000 for mine diff dealer offered me 9000.00 3 days later. Mine had 140,000 at the time. But they hold there value like jeeps. Don't be fooled

If you believe a seller committed fraud by rolling back the car's odometer, contact your state's enforcement agency for odometer fraud. Depending on where you live, that may be the state attorney general, state police, department of motor vehicles, office of consumer affairs, or highway patrol, verify all the information and make copies of all documents ,I wish you good luck.

I agree with botat 2. If you were never informed about the rolled back odometer or worse, deliberately lied to with a fake carfax report, you can sue the seller for fraud in the state you bought it from, even if it's a private sale. What did you shell out for that FJ when you bought it?
