Gear stick / lever chop

I moved my post out of someone’s older post as it’s probably not the done thing? Anyways, always wandered why gear lever was this long? I read that it was to emulate a shovel handle but it was just too long and got in the way and with 2 young boys climbing around the truck It just made sense to chop it, looks better too IMO,
Start choppin,

I have been working my way thru upgrading dash and rear pillar speakers and decided to shorten the gear stick. As others have stated the lower half just snaps apart from the upper leaving the white insert that you can just trim flush (remove the silver trim piece from the upper knob first)
I the cut the lever about 20mm from where the 8mm rod tapers up to about 9.4mm. It look pretty ****ty with too much rod exposed so I was trying to figure out how to get the rod down to the 8mm I needed, I have an old tap and die set and decided to tap it with an M10x1.25 and then down to an M9x1.25 and then finally the M8x1.25 to fit the threaded knob, it was damn tight after the 9mm cut so I thought why don?t I just run an M9x1.25 down into the white nylon part of the know and open that up and VOILA, she?s mint. If you do cut it this short remember that the know will sit slightly higher in the gate when it?s in P,R or D than it will when it?s in the lower gears. You don?t want it bottoming out into the silver fascia on around the gate. I put a couple of drops of super glue on the rod threads to prevent it from being wound up and down and it?s locked up nice and solid and not going anywhere. Fairly easy mod if you have a basic tap and die set, take your time and measure twice and cut once.

Did something similar to mine a couple of weeks back. I didn't cut mine down as much though, just about 2 inches. I first threaded it down with a 9x1.25 then the 8x1.25, then I ran my set nut down before cutting, that way I could fix any threads by removing the nut. i like it, but may end up going a bit shorter later on.

With 2 snot gobblers under 5 and normally having one in the front seat if mums not in the car. Reaching over to pick stuff up they have dropped and generally having kids climbing around the car I thought it would just be easier having a reduced height gear shift. I just prefer the feel of it too, some people have even said that it increases the force needed to shift it....
