Head Unit upgrade....no trim kit please!

I know there are numerous head unit thread on this forum, but I can't find what I'm looking for so I wanted to start a new on.
Looking to upgrade to an aftermarket headhunt. Mainly to us CarPlay and a better camera view.
I don't want one of those Chinese Android units. I know they can be buggy and want to keep my color matching fascia.

Here is the question.
What is the largest screen that can be installed without a trim kit? I know its a 200mm (7.87") space but most units are 6.8" and need a trim kit which I don't prefer. I see Pioneer had an 8" unit the DMH-C5500NEX.
I see pics of Pioneer and Kenwood online units without trim kits but can't determine the exact models. Any help would be appreciated.

Well after much research on this topic I’ve come to some solid conclusions.
Here are the possible options for upgraded head units for an FJ.
1. get a 200mm head unit out of an older Scion. Won’t work if you have JBL system in your FJ.
2. go Chinese and get a new dash facia and from what I’ve read you’ll problem have issues with these cheap stereos. Might look good but you get what you pay for. Can’t imagine you’ll have top quality sound but I don’t know.
3. get a quality aftermarket radio from a reputable manufacturer. The most trusted in no particular order are probably. Alpine, Sony, Pioneer, JVC and Kenwood. All make radios that fit a standard double din opening. You will need a trim key….no two ways about it. The only caveat is Kenwood makes a radio for the Australia market that fits the 200mm space.
4. get a floating head until, thats larger than the opening. Looks modern but won’t sit flush. These are $1100 plus. I almost went this route but decided in the end I wanted a cleaner look.

So I chose option 3. Just bought the Sony XAV-9000es from Crutchfield. It’s had multiple camera inputs so I can put a front camera on. Hi resolution screen, wireless CarPlay, supports multiple Bluetooth devices simultaneously, HDMI output And other great features.
I‘m also debating a OEMAudio+ upgrade to my speakers. I’ve head mostly good reviews except from the extreme hard core audiophiles…that’s not me. They want to know the head unit you buy and request you send them the harness from radio so they can retrofit it with their amp. They will tune the system based on the head unit you buy. The Sony I bought has 5V outputs which are better for a system utilizing an Amp. I’m not radio expert but this is my plan.

OEM Audio + is a game changer. I installed this system with the Joying Android unit (Chinese made). I painted the trim to match my 2010 TT. The sound is incredible...especially with the new headunit. The replacement speakers are 2 Ohm (dash, front, rear sub).

I helped my friend install this Kenwood in her FJ. No trim kit, but it was tough to track down. Nobody in Australia wanted to ship to the US. We ended up buying it from an audio shop in Singapore. It fit perfectly and the only complaint is the controls being on the opposite side for the RHD market.

Same as you I'm looking to just upgrade to wireless play like Apple CarPlay and want it to fit the double DIN space without hanging outside of the dash. After my reading I am think of the Alpine iLX 507. Anyone else use this and any hints on installation? I have a Best Buy gift card so I'll be getting it there and this includes free installation. Not so sure on that so I'll supervise the usage of Scotchloks :)

There are a lot of related Chinese-made headunits like the one you are referring to. Experiences have been wildly varied, but from what I can gather...the best reviewed Chinese-made unit the Joying unit. If you search the forums, you will see plenty of reviews (to include mine).

I do not have a windows based computer, so I have not updated the firmware in my headunit, but it works perfectly fine, so I don't have any complaints going on about 3 or 4 years of use now.

I just went through this process and my head unit arrived today (shipped 1/20 from China). Will install soon including 360 camera. This is a newer unit that I do not believe has been documented here yet. Primary decision point is that it's $350 cheaper than the one that Darryl/Rev posted about a year ago.

This one has a TS10. The specs looked very similar to me, with TS10 having a slightly higher clock speed and more powerful amplifier chip, neither of which I care about at that price difference.

Oh sorry- purchased from the Navirider store on AliExpress. All in with the 360 camera package was $850.
