I was going to do this at the shop. I work in a place that makes dyno test cells and acoustic enclosures, but I figured it was easy enough to do at home.

I went to Menards and got a piece of 1/8" thick x 1" wide by 48" long sheet metal (That's 11 gauge), some 10mm nuts, bolts and washers and some black paint. That's it.

There are two holes already in the FJ behind the small grill. It's hard to see from this pic (later it is more visible)

So my brackets had to come out and up to get around the horn, etc, and then out to the front and up. I made my measurements and then laid out the metal (measured and marked) for my bends and holes. I drilled 11 mm holes for the mounting and the light mounting. Took a pair of hand seamers and made my bends. Tweaked them a little to get them just right and painted them.

I needed to remove the front trim to install them, which was pretty easy

Image

I bolted them in the holes, put the trim back on and ...

In the above pic you can see the shiny bolt location where they were mounted.

While I was at it, I pulled my skid plate off and un-blinged it by painting it black. As soon as it gets mangled I'll make a new one.

UPS says my PIAA fog lights will be here tomorrow. I'll put up more pics when they're installed.

Folks, this was as easy as can be. If you can drill a hole you can do it. My biggest beef about this vehicle was no place to put auxillary lighting without having to get a light bar, brush guard or bumper. Personally I don't need any of that and don't want the extra weight. This is an easy remedy. (Of course by this time next year I'll probably take these off to put the new Warn bumper on and have IPF's blazing, but for now this is it :) )

Glad they worked for you. I'm guessing you had to buy bolts since I neglected to send them. Sorry about that. I'm getting the run around from Trail Gear about my rock rails, but hopefully soon. I may end up cancelling and getting them from All Pro. We'll see.

Yup, fog light pics coming after the install. :)

Nope, the FJ already had the bolts in it, i was surprised when i got up underneath there yesterday and took a look. I did have to go buy a 6" extension for my ratchet though.

Hey Dragon,
I am really thinking about doing that, I don't like any of the bumpers out there. Is there anyway you could post your dimensions and measurements on your brackets, like where you made the bends and all? Also do you think they would be sturdy enough to hold lets say a round KC light insead of a smaller rectangular light (i am assuming that is what you are going with) and where do you plan on running the wiring to? Ah man I am already getting excited about my next mod to Lucille, bigger headlights ;)!

The lights coming tomorrow are PIAA 510's which are round and 4" diamater. This should be fine for 6" diameter lights as well. The mount for PIAA's is on the bottom and swivels 90 degrees. After I get the lights on I will post the dims (want to make sure it fits well) and pics for the wiring. I'm sure I will find one of the boots that have wiring going through the firewall already to run my wiring through, but I won't pin it down until I actually do it.

fyi, there is another way that i was thinking about doing (until i got my dakar light bar for up front). get a piece of 1" angle iron ("L" shaped steel) and mount it to 2 inside bolts/nuts that hold the front steel bumper on, with an edge facing down and one facing forward. this would be a nice platform to mount any kind of lights to and they should shine right through the lower plastic grille. the light bar solved my problems for the lights and the cb antenna though, and it is a light duty brush guard.

Got pics of the light bar? I thought about going that way, previous to this.

okay, here goes. like i said in an earlier post, also a good place for cb antenna. i fab'd a lower cross bar that will use the four bolts that the upper uses to mount to the struts that come out throught the grille. it is at the powder coaters right now though. again, an inexpensive (225.00 plus shipping) light bar, antenna mount and light duty brush guard, especially with the lower bar on it. my only complaint, a very small one: once mounted, it is very close to the bumper, no room for the license plate. in oregon, we need to have them, so i drilled and tapped holes in the tube, got a universal mount from the local auto parts store, and the rest is history.

I would have to say that no driving lights on an '07 especially an FJ is kind of a major downside the the vehicle. I really like the looks and function of driving lights and was very unhappy that the FJ doesn't have them. I'm still holding out to find something that looks stockish to put on. The wait continues...
