Howling or Wowing sound around 50~60MPH?

Does anybody hear howling or wowing sound (4~5Hz) when you are doing 50~60MPH? It sounds like the center of something spinining is not aligned (or off). I'm not sure if it's coming from the tires or rear diff but it just drives me crazy.

Any idea?

5by5,
For your information, mine is AT at around 22k. I haven't seen any sign of leakage since the last oil change in November. Regularly check the tire pressure. Replaced the rear diff oil at 15k (but haven't changed the front diff oil yet).

The RPM is usually between 1700~1900 when it makes the wowing noise.

Hello guys,

I brought my FJ to the dealership and let them figure it out. They said it's from tires which haven't been rotated since day 1. Instead they fixed roof rack noise (clicking/rining) and stole 45 bucks, what the stealership....

BTW, I still suspect the wheel bearing or rear differential. It sounds like this:

Not that loud though.

My FJ makes this noise too, sometimes its so loud! Did you ever figure out what it was?

I find it makes that noise when I'm driving straight into the wind at 60+mph. If I'm not driving into the wind, no noise. If anyone can help me out, please let me know.

Have you checked to make sure the lugnuts are torqued? Balance weights on the wheels? See if one maybe threw itself off? Do the tires look like they've worn uneven? Have you had the alignment checked? Driveshaft balance? Checked for a skid plate that might have wiggled loose?

Sinerasis, thank you for the advice. I will check the following items asap:
1. lugnuts
2. balance weights on the wheels
3. tire wear patterns

In addition, I will jack my FJ up and see if the wheels are tight. But the wheel alignment and driveshaft balance would be the last ones to be examined.

Put Mud Tires on it, you'll never hear all that other stuff over the roar of the tires. Problem solved.

Did you ever find out what the problem was? I am having the same problem. I have good year silent armor tires that have a fairly aggressive pattern on them but they have less than 10k on them and Good year said the noise is coming from the rear end. I took it to a mechanic and he said it was the wheel bearings so I had him replace them on the rear and when I got it back it was doing the same exact thing. No I am 1400.00 poorer with new wheel bearings that I didnt need and still have the noise.

let me be simple.. howling sound into a headwind is the result of bad windshield seal. the upper trim acts like a reed in a wind instrument . I took a piece of gorilla tape and fixed it in five minutes.. not a good fix for permanent .. it works.. need a recall..

Wow! That video sounds just like mine!

Did we ever find out what was making that noise?

I am now believing its tires, mine are pretty "tired"...uhem....

I was starting to worry, had Les Schwab rotate and align the truck just before Thanksgiving and it took until the same week in December to start making that same kind of noise...

I didnt know if it was the front diff dying or what!

When I slow down, sounds like a roaring gear drive, when I turn to the left or right slightly it gets quieter......I took it back and had them Balance the tires, however no change....

If anyone has any other suggestions on this please let me know!:mecry:

I'm not sure if its the same sound. But I experienced something similiar when I was in 4WD (I have an AT)

I just got my truck back the other day from the dealership. They mentioned that they have a TSB for that specific problem. Their suggestion was to replace the diff fluid with synthetic fluid. I was already changing my diff fliud and spark plugs.. so it worked out perfectly. I will try driving in 4WD tomorrow and report back if I hear it again. The noise wasnt a constant howling sound though for me.

It was also -30C when the howling sound started.

Sounds like the rear diff. I have blown three of them and they usually start howling first because the ring gear carrier bends or warps and creates an ring and pinion misalignment. If that is the case and your issue is the same as mine, the ring gear will fail eventually and start shearing teeth. That sound is unmistakable, it sound like someone just hit your rear diff with a 15 lb. sledgehammer....really hard.

I get a similar noise at same speed, It was a both my Duratraks and my CB antenna. A lower frequency with my tires and a higher one with my CB antenna.

I finally found out the crazy load humming sound from the fj.. I will get right to it.. its the upper trim on the windshield.. the rubber comes loose from the shield and the metal trim is loose. I could not take it anymore so after ten miles of screaming noise I stopped every few miles and put gorilla tape on anything I could find. I ripped a one inch strip and put it between the windshield and the top trim above the window.. Howl has stopped.. this is a factory defect due to the angle of the shield... I say we start turning them in.. I plan on having mine looked at soon. I have video and after shots.. with tape on my 35.000k FJ..

its the windshield upper trim.. the whole FJ vibrates.. makes a crazy noise.. I used gorilla tape while pissed off every five miles to find it.. a one inch strip acrossed the upper windshield and trim will stop the noise.. it is bs and we should have it fixed at know cost.. design flaw from angle of window..
I have video to prove it..

Solved: I had this issue with the factory installed windshield on my 2013 Trail Teams FJ. Awful howling noise at 70-80mph (or higher), which could vary depending on wind conditions. Thankfully there is a revised part which eliminates the loud vibration noise caused by the original windshield molding design. I originally thought it was my roof rack, then perhaps my winch bumper, but ultimately tracked it down the upper windshield molding. It is a known problem that Toyota has now addressed with a revised part, which comes with foam trim added to the front weather stripping which dampens the vibration and eliminates the noise. This has solved the problem for my 2013 FJ Cruiser, tested up to 85mph, and I could not be happier to have it finally gone. For the Cement Gray (Trail Teams Edition) the original part # was 75503-35060-B0, and is now updated to 75503-35061-B0 for the revised design which eliminates the wind/vibration noise. I suspect for other colors the change would also be from .xxx60-xx to xxx61-xx. I replaced it myself at home, and did not need to use any additional adhesive to install the part. It took all of 20 seconds to install after removing the original.
