For 'protecting' which brake lines ... hard lines, or flex lines out to the calipers?

And protecting them from what?

If use of this inexpensive, readily-available material was of any value, you would see it widely used in motorsports.

For the steel hardlines, it would likely be a disaster in any areas where it's frequently wet or especially in the rust belt, where the convolutions in the 'wrap' would hold water or road salt in close contact with the line, accelerating corrosion.

 

They make brake line gravel guards. LINK

 

They might wrap hard lines in reflective anti heat tape or worse case/bad engineering, use fire sleeve. One might use that plastic sleeve for protecting from abrasions and does a decent job from radiating heat as your engine harness is wrapped in sleeve and tape.

 

"opinion on wrapping brake line with this kind of plastic wrap?" - no point to it, never heard of anyone doing it for the reasons stated in original post (no temp protection is required, or provided, some minor impact protection would be provided by a plastic wire harness wrap, but not sure why you think you need it)

If you have concern for severe enough impact to damage the steel brake hard lines, re-route them inside of the cabin (as is done on race/rally vehicles).

4W2FJC's link above might be worth putting on the flex lines, on a race/rally vehicle. Or better yet, fit stainless steel braided flex lines for roughly the same benefit plus the added benefit of firmer brake pedal. Note the ABS sensors wiring is probably more fragile and more exposed to damage than the brake hoses are.

 

The only issue I could see is the brake line getting hot and melting. Considering the wrap is plastic, it wouldn't provide a whole of protection

think you answered your own question.. me, i would put heat extractors on my brake lines, Because everyday is race day!

 

You should do it!
Toyota, Jeep, GM Engineers who have built Billions of cars know nothing!
Especially since that wrap is so inexpensive.
Wrap that rascal!

 

It would make corrosion worse + make it hard to diagnose issues. Don't do it. For corrosion may be spray it with fluid film, cosmoline or any other sticky goo

I'd love to know how in the hell you're supposed to install those spring gravel guards on brake lines with installed fittings.

But Amazon does sell the stainless steel versions for these guards, which people seem to like, but I'm assuming they're putting them on, then putting the fittings on afterward and flaring the ends. But I've never had good luck making a reliable double flare on a small steel brake line, ever. Copper, yes. Steel, no.

Just get a set of crown stainless lines, they come a little longer if you’d like (I’ve got lots of lift) and are poly outside over the stainless inner. Plug ‘n play.

 

been driving cars and trucks since 1860 never needed brake line guards.

 

back in 1860, wasn't "brakes" just a wooden lever pushed against the wagon wheel?

 

Before I would do that just flush your system and add braided hoses.

 

The hard lines on my Jeep Comanches are wrapped in gravel guard from the factory.

 

It’s on the back of the axle and wrapped.

I find it interesting, for a brake line, on the top, on the back, as evidenced by the photo it is already fairly well protected.

What about the flex lines on the Jeep Comanche?

 

Front flex lines do not have any wrapping, just rubber.

 

The brake lever on most wagons was indeed wood, as well as the brake block. The brake block was sometimes covered in leather but never plastic.
