rear brakes inside pad lower spring clip - necessary?

Had to replace the rear brakes at 57k miles. I guess that's not awful but the front brakes are perfect. Anyway, went metal to metal on the RR inside pad. The little spring clip that goes on the bottom of the inside pad was so worn that it falls right off. I can get the kit from Toyota tonight but I put the truck back on the road without the clip. It doesn't seem to serve any purpose, really.

Does anybody know what this clip is for? Is it critically necessary?

Thanks!

That little clip is just the pad wear indicator... it squeals when it hits the rotor... It sandwiches in the stainless caliper slides which should keep it in place. If they took that clip into consideration while making the caliper it probably should be there. Seems like that particular pad might shimmy around too much without it. I just did my brakes this weekend and had forgotten to put one back in... took it all back apart to install it lol. I dont, however, see any reason it couldn't be driven without it

Don't even get me started on the fronts... what a nightmare.
