Steering wheel replacement

I’m looking to find out if a 22/23 Tundra TRD steering wheel will fit in the FJ?

Considering this swap for future reference because it looks awesome, has leather, has a spot on bottom center for gripping, it’s also heated etc. Just looks like it will ”fit” much nicer in an FJ than the stock steering wheel.

I think maybe some of the button functions might not work if they aren’t plug n play but I would imagine there are ways to get those working?

Just looking at the images comparing the FJ to Tundra....looks totally different, so probably a no.

There are a bunch of wheels on the market for the FJ that are kind of similar -
This company makes them for both FJ and Tundra....maybe they can help you.

In all probability the splines are the same for all of them, so your challenge will be finding steering wheels which will electrically interface with what your FJ has. Odds are that if they have the same number of switches you can use that wheel.

The last time I wanted to do a custom project like this I bought some used parts from scrap yards and kept the one that worked (like buying shoes on line). If the scrap yard will not take a return then re-sell via ebay to recoup what you can and chalk it up to the cost of making yours a one of a kind piece of perfection.

Yup it might have to come to that, but I’d rather throw it out here first and see if anyone here done anything with the steering wheels first before I go experimenting and would be nice to save myself the pain and $ too if it doesn’t work to know ahead of time for whatever reasons.

Also on a side note I was just reading some posts you made in the past about heated JPN mirrors and looking into those also as it’s a must here in Ontario to have heated mirrors.

What are your 'requirements' for a replacement steering wheel?

Leather AND heated?

OEM upgrade packages #1 and #2 included a very nice leather wheel.

From the 2014 sales brochure:
"Leather-trimmed tilt 3-spoke steering wheel with audio, Bluetooth®18 hands-free phone and voice-command controls".

Function wise, I’m happy with the buttons etc on the oem steering wheel, but I dislike the 3 spike design with the center spoke on the middle on the bottom, and it interferes with where I like to have my hand on long drives. I also dislike the rounded airbag section, seems it looks odd in a truck that has lots of “square” looking parts.

Aside from those I’m looking for a nice leather preferably perforated, nice stitching, and heated would be a bonus but not a deal breaker.

The tundra has all of what I’m looking for, even the platinum edition one, but it does have some extra buttons I think we couldn’t set up for the FJ seeing it never came with some of those options.

I probably wouldn’t mind a 4Runner steering wheel either, but wanted something a bit nicer looking than that. I’m liking the hilux and fortuner wheels I’m seeing on eBay, they could definitely fit the FJ style IMO, but some of these are RHD vehicles so I’m not sure if anything is different vs our LHD ones.

I just replaced mine. Just so you know. The FJ has two wires that plug into the air bag. One wire for the horn. One for the cruise control. And one for the steering wheel controls. Mine didn't come with the right side controls being an 07. So I purchased new button assemblies.the Axxess module picked up on the new right side buttons without having to map them. That's all the wires. None extra for heated steering wheel.

Yup for heat it would need some wiring in there to connect for that, and likely a switch with timer on the dash somewhere, kinda like the mirror heaters or rear defroster.

I'm assuming the cruise control lever can be removed and just wired into the cruise switches? Wouldn’t make sense having the lever there after if the new wheel had buttons for it.

If the wheel FITS mechanically speaking and all is good there, I’m assuming the rest should be a matter of just electrical work/wiring up buttons to work. I doubt the newer gen Toyotas have the same wire ends and clips the FJs do, but those can always be spliced and redone properly anyway.

The biggest concern would be the airbag, wiring that up properly of course.

Lots to think about with this mod.
