I own a 2007 toyota FJ Cruiser that has an automatic transmission, we bought it used. I am looking into swapping for a 5 speed manual. Does anyone know how much that would cost to do? Or the best way to approach the swap? I have been looking online for manual transmissions for FJ's and have not had much luck.

The best way to approach the swap is to trade your auto in for a manual.

It will be cheaper, and the fact that it's not borderline impossible is an added bonus.

We're not dealing with a carbureted small block here.

You should be able to find someone to swap from 5AT to 6MT easy. There several threads on people asking the opposite. Apparently the 5AT is better when going off road. Plus it's easier to drive on a daily basis (especially in traffic laden regions).

Go on your regional FJ thread and post there. You should be able to find something.

It is not an easy swap by any means. You have electronics to consider, I do believe the drive shafts are different lengths etc.

The 5AT is less involved where the MT needs you to me much more aware of everything going on.

The MT is easy to drive in traffic it is geared quite well for this.

As someone else mentioned your best bet is to trade in your AT for an MT.

Easy?

Some things to ponder:

3rd pedal. Dash cluster. Center console shifter location. ECU programming. Full time center diff. Clutch resi in engine compartment.

If that's easy I tip my hat to you sir.

Swapping transmissions would be more work than buying a different FJ and changing swapping out any upgraded gear you might have on your current FJ. Unless you just want to do this for the challenge of doing it, I wouldn't see any reason to go this route.

As far as which is better off road, I'm guessing that's a matter of personal preference. I bought a manual FJ, and am very happy I did! I just like having a direct connection with my wheels.

Agreed, this is not an easy swap. Bolting up the trans will be the easiest part but after that it's money and hassle. As said above, ECU, Pedals, Tcase, Console, Gauge Cluster, Odometer, Drive shafts, and I'm sure a few more things all have to be dealt with.

I know it's easier said than done sometimes, but go trade for a stick. good luck.
