Using the stock Subwoofer Enclosure for a New Speaker

I bought a Kicker Comp RT, which has the red stitching (Kicker's Mid Range sub) along with separates for the door and dash. Big improvement.

All of the information available on the 10 inch dual coil 4 ohm speaker stated that it is compatible with the FJ the way I had it configured. Going to Crutchfield verified this. Should work with the sub box. Just swap out the speakers.

WRONG.

I should have known. I had to cut a hole in the existing plastic face of the stock subwoofer enclosure. NOT EASY.

Here is a before and after. The before had a major problem. Because of the bezels on the front of the plastic, there was no smooth connection for the speaker to mount on. This made certain frequencies render muddiness and made bass nodes much more pronounced (like +10 dB).

I bought some fiber board and cut it out in roughly the same shape as a panel that I would cut out of the plastic. And I used Raptor paint to go over the pieces. Some were discarded.

Now all that's left to do is buy the speaker grill and we'll call this finished, even though I'm not in love with this solution. It sounds good and doesn't look like a horrible mistake.

Hope that helps somebody out there.
