Admiral Insurance in the UK advised they do not have details of the FJ Cruiser

Good evening,

Reading the forum entries on insuring in the UK, it appears that various members have had positive experiences with getting insurance through Admiral. I thought I would get ahead this year and try and get a multi car policy with Admiral.
However when it came to the FJ, the young lady assisting claimed that there were no FJ's on the Admiral system. They only had two entries for a Landcruiser DVTI?

My Jap import was clearly not recognisable by number plate. I can only assume that this arises from the DVLA registration methodology.

My question to all successful holders of Admiral insurance is:

"Did Admiral recognise your vehicles by number plate, or did you have to provide further further information such as model number ie GSJ15-GKASK.?"

I went to insure with them when I first imported my FJ in 2014. I was told it wasn’t on their system, but no problem they’d get the underwriters to add it. They gave me insurance (I already had a policy for the Honda and had had the Volvo I sold to buy the FJ there too on multi car). So this says they do have it on their system now!

when I can to renew they told me they didn’t insure cars with modded suspension, a mod that had been declared when I first insured, so it seems they took my premium on a car they didn’t insure.

I would recommend a specialist insurer for any vehicle that isn’t run of the mill which is all the big companies want to deal with.

My FJ's insured with Admiral. I've just checked my policy and the make and model name is shown on the policy docs- i.e.Toyota FJ Cruiser - thats it. If I recall correctly they couldn't get the make and model from the registration number for the very reason you state( description on my V5 is Toyota Silver!) so I had to call them for a quote and explain its an imported vehicle and gave the make, model name, (FJ Cruiser) and engine size. I don't recall providing them with anything else.and definitely not the frame and model code (GSJ15....) This is my third year with them.

I tried twice and failed both times. They tried to help but in the end couldn't insure it. FJ is not recognised by the plate number, but that's not the issue. Explanation that they insured it for other people, didn't help. So I'm losing on multicar policy discount on my daily driver and paying a fortune to insure FJ somewhere else.

Previously, was paying around £650 for two normal cars, now £450 for daily and £1000 for FJ.

Sounds like you need to shop around. FYI a multi car policy doesn’t generally actually work out cheaper, one car is cheaper, (the ‘carrot’) one is more. A-Plan do a multicar and insure my vehicles, all mods etc etc.

Admiral multicar policy worked for me pretty well in the past and discount was real. I did shop around, I always do. But for some reason, Admiral is the cheapest and offers the best policy for me since 2012. Maybe because of type of the cars that I drive.

I could not find cheaper insurance for FJ, than around £1000. I used 13y NCD, I don't have points, previous accidents, I'm not young and I live in safe area.

I contacted them and number of other companies mentioned here and found on internet. It's all in other thread. Still, couldn't find anything cheaper. I don't remember if A-Plan gave me a quote or not. I have two separate lines of NCD, so don't need matching. Another insurance merry go around in August.

I do have a garage and declated that my car will be kept in it, so never encountered that issue. But my policy has following exclusion:
"EXCLUDING THEFT WHEN NOT GARAGED
Theft cover is excluded in the event of the insured vehicle not being kept in a locked garage between the hours of 10pm and 6am whilst parked at
your home address as last notified to us."

It's Safely Insured (previously Sky) underwritten by Marketstudy. I'm going to change company at next anniversary date, because I don't like their T&C. Other weird requirement is telling them about going abroad, because without prior notification full cover is not valid abroad.

So I wasted my time with A-Plan, talking to two branches and was refused the quote, because I don't own my car for 2 years. No one of you guys mention such requirement with A-Plan.

So this year, so far, I have quote from Chris Knott, which is £1100, with 13NCD, no accidents or tickets, not young driver and safe area in Surrey. At least they don't have any issue with FJ and offer decent T&C. Now will check other companies which ignored me last year and I couldn't wait longer to chase them.

I am glad it is not just me that struggled to get cover. I did go with A-Plan for £995.00 Here and on here Facebook people are quoting under £500 but I couldn't get anywhere close! I got to the point when calling insurance companies will you insure a FJ? before I gave them any details. If they could not answer then I moved on. So many company's want all your details first and after 10+ mins say sorry we don't insure them.

A-Plan is just a broker I was refused one day and then the next week they gave me a quote! We need to find out who are the actually underwriters for the insurance brokers all go to and make a list and go direct!

I tried over weeks and found it very frustrating!

After spending some more time on the phone and spelling all my details numerous times, summary is:

-A-plan refused to give me quote because I don't own car for 2 years

-Brentacre couldn't give me quote, because my car is not modified and they specialise in modified cards. Also mentioned my London post code being an issue, as they have only one underwriter covering this area. I do have London post code, but I don't live within Great London borders. I guess, that post code might be the reason for expensive insurance.

-Marks Richards gave me first decent quote at £794 with underwriter AGEAS, after I updated it a bit, "moved" car from garage to driveway and topped up miles to 10K, it went up to £828. There was also issue with policy wording, not specifying which countries outside of EU are covered (Norway, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, etc). It was clarified, all covered.

-Chris Knott initial quote was £1100, but after giving them price from Marks RIchards, they came back with £747, underwrite Highway. There was also issues with covered countries, because Liechtenstein was not listed as covered outside of EU and consultant confirmed with Highway it's not. Probably whoever wrote the policy, has no idea where it is or if it even exists.

-Safely Insured gave me renewal quote at £1005 with modified details and car parked at driveway, instead of garage.

So, I will probably go with the cheapest quote, which also has Legal Cover included and decent conditions and avoid driving through Liechtenstein. I could probably call a few more companies, but I doubt they will be cheaper and spelling all my details and confirming all T&C on the phone is time consuming.

This year, August 2024:

-A-plan (now Howden) - they said that there's no 2 year ownership requirement, that 1 year was enough. Well, too late, because they refused me based on this last year and now I will own FJ for 2 years. They couldn't find any insurer, because my car is not modified, so it's not special. Being imported is not special enough.

Brentacre - I didn't bother calling.

Chris Knott
- sent me renewal at similar price to last year (£940), but when I called today, I was told there's one company that now offers policy 50% cheaper, but they have to check if bike rack and roof rack are accessories or modification. They ended up being accessories. So, in the end, I paid £511 with Sabre as underwriter. I must say, I'm very happy about it. It's cheaper than I paid for Abart 124 Spider and VW California earlier in the year.

Safely Insured - couldn't find any insurer for me. I had to call twice to chase the quote, to finally learn they couldn't get one.

I was advised by lady from Howden to use website called Quotezone to build my quote and companies will contact me. Maybe she means different quotezone, that I can find, because that website doesn't allow to put FJ Cruiser in details.

Price was for not very young female, 14Y NCD, within M25, but outside of Greater London. 5000 miles pa.

Had similar issues with the Troopy this year having been insured with A-plan last year. Cheapest ended up with the NFU! Keith Michaels were the next best. In the past NFU would insure the FJ but not me for my occupation. So unless you live in a city worth a go

I was editing my previous post, but someone came over, so here's the update. In the end, I bought policy with Mark Richards, because Chris Knott wanted confirmation of my quote from Mark Richards, which I couldn't provide, because they don't send anything, so couldn't buy at offered price of £747. They offered me discount of 10% from my renewal, but that would be £900. At least I can drive in Liechtenstein ;-)

I'm glad this sage is over for now, but I must say, it's a lot of hassle.

Thanks all for the info. I got my FJ last Friday and still waiting for several companies to get back to me including NFU, Admiral, A-plan and Mark R didn't answer my call or respond to my email..

I called Brentacre who refused initially due to no modifications - they said they will continue to renew existing customers policies who don't have modifications.... Times have changed since I past my test if you added fluffy dice it would have doubled your premium.

I spoke again to Brentacre as there are a few medications I didn't think to mention - the trims is backed out (not sure if this was standard from the factory..), steel wheels blacked out, new stereo, roof rack and roof tent on the way and they were able to generate a quote £490. They didn't ask if I needed to add another driver (they take your details in 2 mins flat when I called first) so remembered to add my wife who has 18 years NCD, her own car which is worth more than the FJ and would need to use the car very occasionally and the premium went up to £680 and I need to add a Cat. 1 alarm....
Going to wait for the others to get back in touch..
