I'm was considering buying a 2010 TTSE with 175k miles from an older couple in Southern Virginia. After agreeing to what felt like a good price we set up a time for me to look at it. I like to get a carfax when I'm considering purchasing, so the carfax came back as 1 owner (as expected) but with total loss reported by the insurance company. Of course the seller didn't mention this but when I brought it up they said they had no idea and must be a mistake, but then decided to mention it was hit on the driver side and repaired by the insurance company. The carfax shows no branded title history and they sent me a photo of the clean title (mind it is dated in 2013, 1 year before the incident). The seller claims they want to get the issue resolved (not sure that's possible). The truck is super clean from the photos and has a good maintenance history. If not for the total loss reported on the carfax I would likely buy it tomorrow. Let me know what you guys think and If i should run from this truck or consider purchasing. Thanks.

Why can't I find a clean FJ for a fair price :flame:

If they didn't mention the damage until you mentioned the Carfax, then either run or offer MUCH $ less. Title will change once you register it in your name, it'll catch up.

I'm curious, how much are they asking for a 10 year old with 175K miles on it.

if the repair is done properly, and if you aren't planning to re-sell it, then what difference would the total loss history really make?

"total loss" only means that the cost to repair came to more than the blue book value but the owner chose to have it repaired anyway

The key will be inspecting the repair carefully, and then getting a price appropriate to that quality. If they continue to insist its a mistake, then isn't there a way to confirm with the state, or with the insurance company (Carfax can make a mistake more easily than the State or the insurance company).

I stand corrected, here are some articles on the subject, definitely if it is truly a salvage title the price must come down, even if the repair WAS done perfectly the car is permanently branded "halfway to junk" simply because the insurance company declared it as such:

Evidence that if ever confronted with this situation on your own, cherished vehicle, in such a case, to do whatever it takes to NOT get the insurance company involved, pay for the repair yourself and avoid the stigma (possibly impossible if another car is involved, though).

So you carry liability only on your vehicles?

OP
If that vehicle has a salvage title now the retail price is normally <50% of normal retail.
175K miles and salvage title is not a great find.
