Doors lock automatically after exiting?

Hey All,

So I have had my FJ for about 4 months now, and am loving it..
Several times over the past few months I have caught the FJ automatically locking after I got out of the vehicle (after driving)... Seems to me its about 3-5 minutes after exiting.

I thought I was crazy, or maybe just hitting the button on the key FOB in my pocket... its happened several times...

Well today I got home, put my keys and wallet on the kitchen counter, and went out to shovel some snow.. and low and behold I heard the click... went to look and the FJ was locked..

Is this an FJ feature? a toyota Feature? This is my first Toyota, drove dodge trucks for past 20 years.

I curious about this and if its a malfunction, as I am constantly camping in the woods, and have been known to leave my keys on the seat... would hate to have my truck lock me out... haha :surprise

Nothing in the manual that I can find.

by the way, I am driving a 2012 FJ, AT.

My 2012 does not do this. If you lock with the fob and then unlock and do not open a door I believe it does lock again automatically after a period of time. Pretty sure this is covered in the owners manual.

My 07' did it the night I bought it with both keys on the passenger side seat. I put the paperwork and keys on the seat, went inside to get the license plate, and when I came back out the doors were locked. I noticed if the keys weren't in the ignition and everything was shut, the doors auto locked. I was able to duplicate it while at the dealer. They had no answer for me!

My '07 FJ's haunted too!

I'm really happy to see this thread because Ive been having "episodes" of self-locking and unsuccessfully searched for answers. I don't think its an intentional manufacturers feature, as some have suggested, because I usually leave my FJ unlocked at home and I've only had 4 or 5 episodes in 6 months. It's spooky, and potentially a major pain in the butt. I even leave the door slightly ajar while warming it up, even though I've only noticed self-locking with engine off.

Does yours happen and then repeat/re-lock several times over after you unlock? How long does it take to re-lock? what finally makes it stop, or does it stop itself? Where were your keys when it started? If your's comes in episode, how long between them?

I've been observing. I found that briefly turning on ignition is the only way to stop the cycle - it has not stopped itself. Like you, I've timed about a couple of minutes between my unlock and its re-lock. Most often I'd just picked up the keys, or just put them in my pocket, and I've been extremely careful NOT to touch the button pads. The first two episodes were only a few weeks apart, then no prob for a couple of months, then about once a month. No correlation with weather, temp or length of time sitting. It's never happened soon after exiting the truck, the way an auto-lock might behave. But its ALWAYS happened when I'm looking! Maybe she's just trying to get attention...

I'd like to find an explanation almost as much as a cure!!

well first off Id like to thank everyone for confirming in am not losing my mind!! haha
I seriously was starting to wonder!!

I havent really played with this to test conditions which may cause the locking or relocking, but know that I know Im not nuts... I will have to play around with it.

As for the automatic off headlights... Yes I did discover that early on in my FJ... My Ram trucks had automatic lights so I never thought much about turning lights on and off. Left them on a few times in the FJ, and they went off!! Which is a Great feature... unless your using the headlights for something in the drive way...and they shut off on you. :)

anyway, I am due for an oil change for the FJ at the dealership sometime in the next few weeks... I will mention this to them when I am in and see what they say and if it can be changed or corrected.

This will be my first experience with this dealership as I bought my FJ out of province this past fall, so Im really not sure what to expect in terms of FJ knowledge and customer service.

thanks again all
Jason

My '13 will automatically lock the doors after about 5-10 minutes when the keys are not in it. I haven't tried to see if it will do it with the keys on the seat or if they have to be a certain distance away. I seem to remember reading awhile ago that this is something the dealer should be able to program on or off.

so, I went in town shopping with the wife...and waited in the FJ while she shopped...

had some time to play around, and here's what I have discovered.

It appears my original thoughts of the truck locking after I parked and it and got out were incorrect.. I waited for 15 minutes after shutting the vehicle off and nothing...

HOWEVER

If I shut the FJ off, remove the keys and lock the doors, then unlock the doors (FOB button).... the FJ will automatically relock itself within 1 minute. I have only been able to recreate this by doing the above steps.

I guess the purpose behind this would be if you left your vehicle and accidentally pressed the unlock button, the FJ re-locks itself... a security feature. STILL could turn out to be a real pain in the A$$ having this happen in the middle of the woods. :)

anyway, just wanted to share my preliminary findings.

I video taped it happening on my phone, but dont believe I can upload a video here.

Standard behavior... per my 2007 Owner's manual that I have downloaded (explains this specific behavior not sure about some of the other folks):

"You have 60 seconds to open a door after
using the wireless remote unlock feature.
If a door is not opened by then, all the
side doors and back door will be automatically
locked again and one beep will be
heard.
The timing for the automatic door lock
function can be changed. For details, contact
your Toyota dealer."

I'm pretty sure my 2013 Corolla does it, and I think the 2005 Sequoia we had probably did it as well.

On my 2005 Sequoia I could alter the behavior of the auto locking when putting it in drive, etc myself. I wish I could do that myself on the FJ.

Follow these steps to activate or deactivate the Auto Lock feature

Put the key in the ignition and turn it to on.

Press the Unlock button (on the key fob) three times.

Turn the ignition off.

Press the Unlock button (on the key fob) three more times.

Turn the ignition back to on.

The horn should beep once. ... (unless you have reprogrammed it not to as I have as well)

Press the Unlock button (on the key fob) , then press Lock again.

Done
