Long range tank - should I do it?

Ok, so I hate stopping every 200 miles to refuel & I drive a lot. Should I just pull the trigger on a long range tank and be done with it? Benefits being not worrying about as many stops during the week and no worries when out on the trail is just a bonus.....

Thoughts???

No. Sounds like you are spending $$$$ just to save 10 min for a fuel stop during daily driving. But your not saving any time because now you are filling the main tank and the aux tank.
Off road - I guess it depends on how much time you spend off road and how far you go.
Cool factor - heck ya

The reason why the existing aftermarket aux tanks are made from aluminum is that it is by far the lowest cost way to make them, in the low quantities they sell at.

My main incentive for adding one (haven't yet, but promising myself, "soon, soon!"), is for less range anxiety. There are areas with few enough gas stations that it becomes necessary to keep extra track of the status and re-fill early, like when the small tank still has a lot in it, before proceeding, because it will be more than 100 miles to the next town. Those times especially it would be appreciated.

Regarding fill time, it would just be nice to not have to stop and do it so often, even if the larger capacity would make the actual fill time almost as long (only have to get off and stop, half as often).

Toss a rack on the back w/ a Jerry can and a super siphon. ;)

^^This^^ for the $$ involved. Unless you're unable to reach a gas station or just have the money to spend.

I will admit I was also annoyed but my FJC's 'meager' 19gal fuel capacity, but an annoyance is all it is. Just because I couldn't do a full week's commuting without filling up was hardly a reason to invest in a larger tank. And if I was driving a longer distance on the highway it made sense to get out and walk around/stretch once in a while.

I think it would be nice just to get out and stretch after being in the FJ for 200 miles. When I`m on a trail and thought I might need extra fuel I just took a couple of 5 gallon cans. Extra tank is not worth the cost at least to me :)

With my gearing and wheel weight I get 12-13 no matter what so that leaves me at 235-250 roughly per tank but I do carry a 4 gallon jerrycan on the swing out so that gets me to almost 300 and that’s plenty.
I can drive frugally drive and squeeze 15-16 but that’s at 45-50 and that ain’t happening. ?

I could use the second can for fuel giving me 350 total but I really like using it for water.

G'Day,
Even Down Under, Aux tanks are not cheap.....but well worth it ..when you are out back ....
I fitted an OE Aux tank years ago, 2nd hand (total cost fitted was about A$1100) ...that came out of a 2013 FJ...owner was swapping to LPG / dual fuel...
600-800 mile range makes it worth while.....I also had to upgrade my rear coils to carry the extra weight...3 inch Icon overland HD....which carries the weight well...
It is worth it, if you do lots of miles....remotely....or hate filling up constantly.....

Cheers

One of my favorite upgrades.

Not only extends range, but lowers center of gravity and takes it reward where the FJ is light. Makes steep downhills with less nose dive, off camber less tippy. It takes upgraded springs and you can always run it empty if weight is an issue. Flicking a switch while rolling vs. fishing nozzles out of cans and holding them while they drain for 4-5 gallons a container? The buy in is big, performance great.

I installed an early Man-A-Fre aux tank. Best mod ever. It’s not for everyone. Takes a while to fill both tanks, and you’ll throw codes once in a while. I have 150,000 miles on it (170k on the FJ) and I would do it again in a minute.

I debated on whether to put an auxiliary tank or run jerry cans for some time. It wasn't just a convenience thing, as one can be hundreds of kilometres between gas stations and if you add off-road trips in there, additional fuel becomes a must.
I looked at a couple of options with the LRA being about the best solution for adding a tank.

I eventually went jerry cans however, as with the LRA option, the juice just wasn't worth the squeeze.
In addition to being considerably cheaper (potentially - it depends on the solution to carry them you choose), jerry cans are far more flexible.
You can carry only what you need, expanding or removing the number you carry at any given time. You can mix up what you carry in a carrier - water for camping or additional gear if you don't need added fuel for that particular trip, etc.

Looks a good choice @Cory3122 Post up some better pictures when you get it installed. I was lucky to get one of Lee's tanks, it is very much smaller at 65 litres usable volume but this means you can't even see it underneath. One of the best mod's I've made!

BTW do you have the charcoal canister underneath? If so did you check fitment? Australia doesn't have it underneath

First mod I did on my FJ was to fit a Frontrunner 85 l aux tank. Here I need the range, makes me feel uncomfortable not have 1000+ km range.
Just be aware, sometimes there are metal shavings in those aux tanks from the manufacturing process. There have been a few FJ drivers who had to fit a new fuel pump about 10,000 - 20,000 km after fitting an aux tank. The FJ's petrol pump is a bit sensitive. I had an inline filter installed in between the aux and standard tank. No issues.

Before the aux tank I would use this 14 gallon gas caddy on the OEM roof rack. Perfect fit layed on its back which made filler cap up for easy filling, stand it up and let it gravity flow into tank. No messy nozzles, pumps or full can lifting off roof, just put it on the rack empty, fill it, drain it then remove it empty. Worst thing was the roof mass making it tippy on the trail (cornering really suffered).

My second mod on my 2012 FJ was the Manafre aux fuel tank, a bit pricey but IMO worth the peace of mind. I am towing a Hiker Trailer EOR, and boy does the mpg suffers! (it already sucks-pun intended, on the FJ). To me it was worth not having to lift Jerry cans on to the rack or even lift them anywhere (BTW, they are still an option for even more extra fuel, but I do hope it doesn't come to that!). I installed it all by my lonesome (I am crafty, as you can imagine) and it turned out to be a very cool project. Learned a lot! (had to remove it after initial install because the modified filler neck that came with "the kit" was messed up, no leaks, just not tapped right) In any case, it is working perfectly now-just in time for exorbitant gas prices!
Happy camper here with my mod. YMMV. Happy trails!

PS.The images look funny because I used the WA option on my phone camera. The tires came with the vehicle, when they are due replacement I'll invest on decent American made ones...for now I have to make do and go make more money to feed my vices... ;-)
