If engine protection and engine life are of concern to you I would consider 0W-30 or (as I just recently saw on the shelf) Pennzoil 0w-40. Same protection in the winter with the 0W rating, but way better protection in the heat (summer) with the 40 rating vs. the 20 rating.
I considered a higher weight but after the owners manual said you can use it if you have too but need to go back to 0W-20 on the next change I decided to just stick with OEM weight. I like Royal Purlpe as a brand they make many diff Visc. They've been proven to make more HP than other brands - less friction I guess.
However I don't like the thought of the 0W-20 seams too thin for protection but if that's what Toyota says I guess I'll stick to it begrudgingly.

For my specific operating conditions I run either M1 0W40 or AMS 5W40 with AMS Oil Filters on my '07. I've been very pleased with these two oils. In the past I've also used 5W30 and 0W30 synthetic oils as well, but like the first two I mentioned a little better.

Old fashioned revival here....just PM-ed AZFJ25 to ask about his oil report for a 30 grade oil.

Do you guys know if dealers will give you crap for warrenty if using 0-30?
Every engine claim I've ever heard about, the dealer only made sure that the oil was changed on time. NEVER have I seen (nor has anyone else I have had the opportunity to discuss with) a dealership have the oil tested to determine viscosity.

Add to that, Toyota's recommendation for everywhere outside the US includes a 30 and sometimes 40 or 50 grade oil.

I live/travel in an area where it can go to -20F in the winter and 105F in the summer. My '07 is spec'd for dino 5W30 at 5k OCI's but I've used synthetic 0w30 for a while and then 0W40 for the last 6-7 years at 10K OCIs. The engine still runs like new.

Nice! Sounds like the Rockies... How many miles now?

"High in the Rockies" of Colorado. 7,100' to be exact. The FJ's just under 137k miles. Still on the original Panasonic battery and brake pads. Amazing. It's my first Toyota and I'm truly impressed.

Can’t remember if I have post this here or not, but there you have it.

Thanks yeah that is posted somewhere on the site, nice to see it here also.

I honestly think that the 0w20 recommendation is for CAFE.
The 0W-20 oil recommendation is ONLY for the US (and Canada, which blindly copies US automotive standards), and was specified to meet the US Environmental Protection Agency's CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) requirements, NOT for achieving maximum engine life.

The 1GR-FE engine is used world-wide in many different Toyota vehicles, and in all countries which are NOT subject to CAFE legislation the recommended oil viscosities include 5W-30, 10W-30, 15W-40, and even 20W-50.

0W-20 is specifically excluded.

Back in May of 2011 I did an enquiry from Toyota Customer Experience Centre in Australia, since I was very skeptical of 0W-20 oil and wanted to know what grad of oil is used in Australia since the Fj cruiser was just released over there.

Lol, over here they tell us to use the sewing machine oil, and the rest of the plant can use up to 20W-50
