No More Sloppy Shifter

I'm not sure if anyone else has had this issue, but the rubber bushing in the shift rod on my 2007 6MT with 50k miles had pretty much disintegrated to nothing. I had at least an inch of play either way while in gear. The extra weight of my TWM Desert Eagle shift knob probably wasn't helping either. A URD short shift kit was also installed.

I researched how to fix this issue and came up with this: Basically pull the shifter out, pull the two pieces apart, clean out what's left of the old rubber bushing, and mix up some two-part urethane to replace the old bushing. I used Flexane 80 ( Amazon.com: Flexane® 80 Black Liquid: Home Improvement ).

I was also able to push the the lower rod about an inch or so further into the top rod then it was initially. Hence, lowering the overall length of the shift rod. Combined with the TWM shift knob the shifter feels awesome now. Short, smooth, maybe a little notchy, but precise without any grinding. It kinda reminds me of my old S2000.

I should've take some pictures of the process, but I was short on time. Here's the picture that inspired me to do it. I'll try to add one tomorrow of the current shift height.

Nice work, man! When I installed my URD kit, I didn't notice any degradation on the rubber, but will keep this in mind if my shifter gets sloppy in the future.

6MT FTW! :rocker:

That is a shorty now! How much did you chop? Looks like a good 2-3"?! It's like a slap shifter now :rocker:

I think the only issue with shorter is more vibration to the stick? In reading again it sounds like you didn't chop anything, and the stick slides through to lower it? I guess if the vibration is that bad you can always raise it back up!?

I didn't really "chop" any, just pulled the bottom rod out and removed the old rubber bushing. This allowed me to push the bottom about 1 1/2" further into the top of the shifter. The shift knob probably lowers it another inch, for a total of 2 1/2", I think.

I filled the whole "cup" of the top shifter with the 2 part urethane, and overall it feels really solid.

I haven't really noticed anymore vibration. It's quiet, and doesn't seem to transfer noise from the tranny.

Good deal man. I may follow your lead once I see a longer term report. I have long orangutan arms anyway so I'm not worried about reaching the stick when my body is all contorted on a gnarly off camber trail

So, your rubber disintegrated from your rod. Man, that's unsafe...:rofl:

Edit: After I stopped laughing and could focus enough, I read the rest of your modification. Good work! My arms are too short to benefit as 5th gear is a stretch as it is, but this is certainly a great method for replacing the rubber as it sits now without necessarily shortening things.

FJCguy, I have the same thing going on with my 2007 quickshifter and I want to fix it with your Flexane 80 fix. My question is, how difficult was it to pull the shift lever apart, and did you have a hard time getting the original rubber out of the cylinder? Also, how is it holding up?

Thanks for any advice you can offer.
