Stinkyfinger,
When you find a better bearing to replace it with, could you post up the part number and where you got it from???
Thanks!
Will do :bigthumb:

Just had the two lower pulleys replaced, they had the truck for two hours and called me at work you can come get it anytime. shyt!!!! anyway the pullys were $85CDN a pieceis what they told me. truck runs really quiet now. its sweet.

THUMBS UP to Taylor Toyota in Regina Saskatchewan. ++++++
I bought my TT from taylor. Shortly after taking posession, my TT started sounding like gravel truck. It makes the type of sound when a belt is too tight, if you know what I mean. The noise is not noticeable below 2k rpm and sometimes it almost seems to go away. I don't think it's a normal sound so I'll take it in for inspection. I have not been off road with my TT yet and it has only 1300kms.

Rob G,

Doesn't sound like the idle pulleys, believe me, they scream 247! And your belt can't be to tight, it has an automatic tensioner (unless its broken)... Maybe your belt is not aligned correctly in one of the pulley splines, ether way, take it in...

Well after going threw a deep puddle last weekend, I became victim of the pulley whine. I took it down to the dealer to see if it was under warranty...it wasn't (I thought it might be covered under the 60K power train, I have 49k on it).
They charge me $44 to tell me that all 3 idler pulleys are gone and gave me a quote of $586 to replace them along with the belt. I politely told them "F that" and I will fix it myself. :fu:

So today I loosened up the serpentine belt and started wiggling the pulleys to see which one is bad. It was #2 and only #2, so I removed it popped out the rubber bearing shield and repacked it with grease and it's all fixed now, and it didn't cost me a cent. I did let the noise go for a week so the bearing is worn and the grease will only be a temporary fix. But when I had the pulley out I was able to get the dimensions of the bearing so now I can order a new better bearing. :bigthumb:
A new bearing will probably cost me about $20 (for a good one) that's a hell of a lot cheaper then the hundred dollars for a whole new pulley and a bearing that will only go bad again in the next water hole.
Have you tried washing them down and using silicone spray?

I tried hosing them out with water at the car wash, but it doesn't work the bearing is sealed surprisingly good.
Once I popped the bearing seal off I could see that almost all the grease was gone and the grease that was left looked like a low grade grease(which might be the problem). It's been a week now since I repacked the pulley bearing with real grease and it's still running fine, and that's also with a day of off roading in some deep water.

On another note, I'm having a hard time finding a replacement bearing. As best I could measure (without pressing the bearing out) the bearing is an 37mm OD x 10mm ID x 13mm wide and that is not a common size. They Make a 37x12x13 but not a 10mm ID, but I'm still looking and I will be dammed if I'm going to buy a $100 POS pulley at the dealership.

2008 15.5k miles

Yeah, I'm dropping mine off May 1st (2009), got the screaming pulley, maybe more than one, NO IDEA how something like this just goes out :thinkerg:

Mine started making noise last summer - minor, but caught my attention - it has steadily gotten worse and now it gets everybody's attention! 7 year 75k mile warranty.... the glacial silt is a killer up here.

I'll report back with my part replacement list....

IP #2 Died today and i had a funeral for both the pulley and belt. Thanks for posting the diagram of the belt route. I couldn't find it anywhere. Time #5 that this place has given me important info. Thanks U all!!:rocker:

PS. The guy at the dealer said the Alt is most likely next. :mecry:

Replaced all 3 idler and the tensioner pulley myself. None had failed as yet but I had the squeal on the tensioner on a cold engine startup. Was getting worse as time went by so decided to do some preventative maintenance myself. No more squeal.

I have this problem NOW I hate the noising :flame: :flame: :flame: :flame:

Soon will update :rawr:
mine has the loudest noise EVER :flame: :flame: :flame:

:thinkerg: so after visiting an old school mechanic I know, he agrees with me it is the pulleys (very bad condition) yet?

He says that we can fix the pulleys for less than 10$ each

So tomorrow I will see him early morning and see how it will be done and how we will fix them :bandit:

OK, went to NAPA 3 times now and the upper idler (NBH36173) is not correct... Need some help please!!!

I'm looking to replace idler pulley #1 with a sealed one but the idler I'm getting from NAPA thats listed as an upper idler for the FJ is incorrect. The problem is that the factory idler bearing has a ID of 0.405" which makes for a perfect snug fit on the bolt however the upper idler pulley from NAPA has a ID of 0.665". Now apparently this idler pulley is supposed to come with a bearing sleeve but they have ordered in 4 so far and none have the sleeve. Now their book lists a sleeve so I ordered that but the sleeve puts the ID at 0.445" which is closer but still to big for a snug fit.

I got the manager from NAPA to order a couple more in but so far I'm stumped... Anyone have some input (preferably some part numbers) for me???

Just got a call from the manager at NAPA. He got 3 of the 36173 pulleys in and all have (according to his measurements) the correct sleeve. I guess it was just my dumb luck to run into 4 pulleys that didn't.

Using the chart below as a reference, please select the pulleys that you have had replaced.

Please take the time to post up the following information:
1. Activity(ies) that contributed to failure: mud, water, snow, I don't know, none
2. Number of occurrence(s):___
3. Dates of occurrence(s): _____________
4. Replaced under warranty? yes or no
5. last 6 digits of your VIN: __________
1. All of them, mud, water, snow and big muddy icy puddles.
2. One replaced so far. Idler #2
3. Feb. 2012 - I've owned it since 6/08@12k now at 68k, so probably 56k since my start of pulley bearing abuse, lol. First replaced so I guess I'm doing OK.
4. Didn't try to warranty it, over 60k anyhow, plus wanted to do it myself, easy nuff.
5. Umm, I'd have to look, maybe I'll edit this in later.

Oh and thanks Pumbaa, very helpful post...
