ROLA 59502 Hitch Cargo Carrier / End of Service review...

It only took 7yrs and probably a dozen love taps by inattentive drivers following me, but this morning the ol' hitch carrier made its last stand against a late-90s Ford Taurus. The plastic front ends of those 'jellybean' Taurus sedans are remarkably resilient, the radiators much less so, lol.

All four attachment tabs where the basket bolts to the support arm were ripped. Only one bolt remained to keep the platform riding on the support arm until I could get to work.

Hitch looks fine took the hit straight on, wasn't an angled impact. And the brake lights/harness wiring still work fine. I guess I don't need to worry about getting it re-powdercoated after all, lol.

I definitely want another hitch carrier, just wondering if I should get another one of these or a bigger 60x24 platform. Of course all those I've seen so far use square tubing and while they will carry the same load I have doubts they will shrug off the smaller glancing impacts this ROLA carrier has taken over its life.

Well done, ROLA carrier. You served me well.

Great product. That 60# weight does come in handy.
We added one of these last year when we needed extra capacity for winter ski and Christmas trips.
ROLA owes you a replacement for your years of recommendations.

A new ROLA 59502 carrier was given to me for Christmas. The only thing I did not like was the newer-style hitch pin/bolt they use. I understand they did it as an anti-rattle measure, but you can't remove the carrier as quickly/easily when you have to unscrew the hitch pin. And with the OE Toyota hitch tucked up against the bumper cover there is precious little room to get a breaker bar or ratchet with an 1-1/8" socket in there to do so.

I'll end up running a drill bit through the threads before too long and going back to my standard hitch pin.

I purchased the ROLA 59950 (same but folds up) about 6 months ago. I also have the bicycle adapters so I can put 3 bikes on it. It is heavy duty for sure but I have the same issue as you SWITAWI. There is precious little room to put a wrench on the anti-rattle bolt, but I use the open end flat wrench that came with it. Still have to be careful to not scratch the bumper. I will probably do as you mentioned and drill the threads out and put in my locking pin.
