I truly respect your efforts (and cash investment) in this build. The two things I wonder are what led you to do this? Was your FJ still running well? And, what else do you drive? Is it anything special?

I hope that when this build is finished, you post a good detailed list of parts and costs. Also, it would be fun to hear about what challenges were faced during the build.

Even though this build is very interesting to me, I bought my FJ new, first year, in 2006/2007. Other than tires, I have spent exactly 0 (zero) dollars on mods. My paint, especially on the hood, needs help but that isn’t going to happen. So it is hard to imagine how much you’re spending.
I have a few collector cars, but my daily drivers are a Rivian R1S and a Genesis GV60. Both are electric. My wife likes driving the Ram trucks. Go figure.

I always thought vehicles were a small representation of the owner. Along the lines of your dog is a reflection of you. The FJ is strange looking, reliable, and wanting to go anywhere. It is the only vehicle I ever purchased brand new and will never sell.

The build has only been going for approximately 3 months. The drivetrain is definitely a challenge because it has to be solid and able to handle high horsepower/torque. Engine, frame, transmission, diffs, etc. It has to be stout. The engine and drivetrain parts are $65k if that is what you are wondering. The other big challenge will be interior. We are doing 4 Recaro seats with a custom dash and console. The dash will look like a future generation FJ could be. Fit and finish materials will be more like Range Rover than Toyota.

I didn't have a budget, but I think this build will be about $200k $250k going by past builds and work needing to be done.

This build is generating quite a bit of interest and is being documented. Possibly for TV? You never know. I will have a detailed list of all parts once work is complete.

I will be following this with great interest as well- that kind of power will be sick! A couple of questions- what are AMP brackets, will the repaint be stock or ??? and are you going to do any suspension/tire changes/upgrades? To me this is just begging for a Marlin Crawler long travel and 37's...
AMP Research. They make power steps. Paint colors are open, but I will keep the iconic white roof. I wouldn't mind going retro 70's with the TRD 3 color stripe paying homage to Ivan "The Ironman" Stewart.

‘I have serious respect for you spending that kind of cash on, of all things, an FJ

Can't believe I missed this thread. So good! Love the commitment! Any plans to build a cage for safety? Upgraded brakes all around? On my last trip, we to hit about 85mph wide open on the dirt and much too fast for the conditions. I thought I should have some additional safety measures lol.
Please keep the updates coming.

Because of the amount in change of horsepower, we are doing a complete chassis upgrade. I think the brakes are 6 and 8 piston disc, but will need to confirm.

Awesome progress…how much longer? I’ll be spending the winter near there (shipping my FJ down) and would love to stop by to see this amazing build In progress!
