Will 285/70/17 with no lift, break something?

I can't find the answer in my searching. I imagine some people have had to get tires before they can get a lift, right?
So, lets say I get some 285/70/17 tires, BMC if needed but no lift, can I break something if I run it like that for a while? Can they rub anywhere else? Any other complications a newb like me needs to know?

Also depends on the tire manufacturer. Everyone claims to be 285/70's arent all the same. Nitto's run truer to size where as BFG's run smaller.

If your looking for some height but dont want to perform a BMC, try 255/80R17 BFG KM2's. Its what I'm currently running (see picture). Out of the box they are taller than 285's but skinny so they can work without a lift and BMC. If you wheel it hard you will rub and hit the body mount, but you shouldnt break anything. They claim to be 33.4" tall as opppsed to the 285's which are all around 32.8". They typically are cheaper too.(around $200 each for a great M/T - Rock tire is cheap). Have over 31,000 miles on mine with just over 1/2 the tread left.

One other thing- Dont buy spacers without a lift or BMC. they will cause the wheel/ tire to come into contact with the BM. I found out the hard way. Saving you some $

Thank you. I plan on getting a 3" lift but can't afford all my mods at once, and my current tires might not last that long. So, I just want to make sure that if I get the tires first, I won't break stuff.
Tire decision will be a whole'nother thread. Hell, deciding in what order to get the mods is tricky, wish I could just get it all at the same time in the same shop and get it over with. :boohoo:

Well I am doing this tomorrow - with the 3" lift - figured I might as well make room for the tires, but like you, I did a lot of research, and found it to be different dependent from vehicle to vehicle (on whether there would be any rubbing) I am posting pictures in the next post -

good luck.

I was in the same situation like you a month ago when I first got my truck, i wanted bigger tires to fill up the wheel well but dont want to do any body chop nor have the money to buy a 3" lift. I took my chances when I found a set of slightly used Firestone Destination AT 285/70/17 on craigslist for $300, i had them mounted on my stock steelies and wheeled it a week after, normal street driving does not rub at all even at full turn, i noticed sligh rub when backing up with the wheels at full lock but when I checked it, i can find where its rubbing, i guess it just the plastics on the mudflaps or something?but you wont break anything with these tire size, i was able to wheel it with no problem. IMO its not much difference between the 285 and 265, 285 is only wider and maybe 1/2" inche taller than the 265, I was thinking 265 with wheel spacers will be just about the same as 285. Using 285 sacrifices gas mileage forsure, Now im thinking about going back to 265 M/T and use wheel spacers instead. I hope this will help? Good luck.

I ran my stock 265 BFG ATs with spidertrax 1.25" spacers & they rubbed fairly significantly even during normal street driving. To reference, a 265 is roughly 10.43 inches wide (varies slightly based on tire brand, etc.) and a 285 is 11.22 inches wide. So about .79" wider, divide that by 2 (half on the inside of the rim, half on the outside) a 285 adds about .4" width to cause body mount rub vs. running a 1.25" wheel spacer, which pushes the entire wheel and tire out that far. If you are experiencing rub now with a 285 I would think you would worse running a 265 with a wheel spacer. Obviously the extra diameter of a 285/75/16 doesn't help either they are actually about 1.25" taller than 265/75/16. Now that I switched to 285s and lifted the front about 2.5" with the wheel spacers my body mount still had to be chopped, after about 2 days driving like that a buddy of mine did the chop for me & no more worries

Chopping is so liberating! Nothing like cutting into your new ride to make you feel great!! I did mine- no issues even when I ran some big meats- 315/75R16 Yoki's on my Countersteers. They rubbed everywhere else though...

As for actually doing it, its quite simple and there are enough good examples with photos on the forum to get the general idea. I never welded mine in since they havent moved since its been done. Some do and some dont.

One of these days when I'm home I'm going to hold a BMC mod day to help out some folks in Houston. I have all the equipment its just I'm hardly ever home.

That and help some with trail rash since in my former life I owned a detailing company.

So back to the issue- I would do the chop since its going to be needed down the road eventually and this way its a non issue.

As for the guy with the rubbing at full lock in reverse- your rubbing on the plastic in the fenderwell in front of the tire (if you look at your wheel as a clock it would be 2 oclock on the passenger side and 10 on the driver side.).
