Wind Tunnel Effect From Driver's Window

I couldn't find any discusions of this topic, but there's no way I can be the only who has noticed that you can't drive an FJ with the driver's window down. I really love my truck, but I can't stand not being able to drive around windows down. The wind that slams into the side of my head is just plain obnoxious. I've tried every combination of window heights for the driver and passenger side, and I am just not happy. Seriously, am I the only one? ~Drew :mecry:

I've got the in-channel vent visors, and having the driver window at approx. the same height as the top of the mirror keeps pretty much all of the wind away from my face/head. YMMV.

Vent visors can only do so much.

I've tried the approach where you prop open the rear window, and IMO that's indeed the solution; allow more airflow through the cabin.

Now, if there were only a more convenient way to open that rear window... (which has been explored in other threads, with some great ideas)

The WeatherTec window visors help tremendously. They just snap into place, no double sided tape involved. I recommend them.

I'm definitely going to try the vent window visor deflector things. I also can smell the fumes with the back window open. Maybe with the side-exiting TRD exhaust it wouldn't be so bad.

Can't believe it: I've got something on my FJC that you guys don't get in the U.S.!!! Usually I've got severe probs to get stuff for my rig in Germany, but now it appears there's something on the European market for our trucks: Deflector things.

Here are some pics I just took with my iPhone:

They're made in Poland. I bought'em at a German eBay seller, but they seem not to ship to the U.S.

Some of you already PMed me because they also want those, which I definitively understand 'cause their looks are way better than the WeatherTec deflectors :rocker:

So here are the facts:
The set consisting of deflectors for both front doors cost me around 50 US$. S/H to the U.S. would be approx. the same, so you'ld spend at least 100 bucks (maybe taxes on top of it which I dunno). I wouldn't mind buying and shipping those for you. In case one of you wants those, just PM me. Money transfer would be via PayPal...

I agree with you there. Those deflectors are the best ones I have seen for the FJ. They are not a, "huge-bubble-bulge-eyesore", like the other options.

Instead of you doing all the footwork to buy and ship etc. Can you just do some research on the manufacturer? Maybe if you can find their company website and see who they sell to. Then going that route maybe we could locate a business that would ship to the US. There might be some UK version of an Kragen auto parts store that could ship to the US.

I would do that myself, I order stuff from overseas, China, UK etc. It is usually not to hard to find someone to ship to here. The problem is the language barrier. I can't read Polish, or German. I can barely type in American without using spell check, and that's the only language I know.

That's just a thought. I don't know if it would be easier and more beneficial going that route, or not.

I did a quick search on the web and found the WeatherTech website. On the site, they show an option for "Front-and-Rear" air deflectors. Given that the rear windows on FJs do not open, is this option merely for the sake of esthetics, or does the additional rear deflector provide any sort of additional aerodynamic/flow benefits. I suppose I will pose this same question to the vendor, and see if they have any insight.

Note: WeatherTech confirmed that they are purely cosmetic. Kind of silly if you ask me.

Are you surprised people buy things purely for looks? :silly:

My wife text me on her way home from work the other day (first time in the rain with her FJ) asking me to please order the vent visors. I guess the water drips in pretty good.

I get way to many "buy these or buy this kind" answers on them, so I'm just going to get a set and be done with it. Most likely Ventshade or Wade. She had the Wade on her Sequoia and they worked very well. In channel style, FYI.

Does anyone have any idea whether the WeatherTech brand also eliminates the annoying dripping which occurs when raining outside? I find that with my window even partially open, the rain drips all over the inside frame of my door (even the window switches, which seems a bit dangerous to the electrical system).
