G'day Mate,
Its meant to look factory ...
drill a hole in the 1/4 panel in the same spot as the radio antenna, make a mounting plate that sits under the 1/4 and attaches to the hood hinge, and fit a rubber antenna cap from Toyota.
But I won't take credit for it... it was made by @NestahEdition ..one of the FJ's greatest modders.

Cheers
Baz

Baz, I really need your input. If you mount an antenna through the cowl like you did, can you add a spring? Is it necessary for trail use in your opinion? I prefer the cowl mount way more than the rear hinge mounts and I'm trying to piece together how to do it...

G'day Mate,
Yes you can add a spring.
I was running my CB antenna with a spring, then changed to a different antenna set up, and removed the spring.
Is it necessary.... depends on the terrain and type of wheeling you do...
Most of my wheeling is in hilly bush n scrub, with gully's and gorges etc... up n down .... so I use a 6 inch 3db gain antenna for that terrain, being short and whippy it doesn't need a spring. when over landing on flat country I use a 4 ft 6db antenna ...but again without a spring ... mainly cos its is flexible enough and less overhanging scrub that it could get caught on ...

where its different, is that our CB is UHF, at 477mhz and we use ground independent antenna's ... so its alot different to the old 27mhz ..you guys use.
We don't even tune them...

On the right hand side, I use a spring with the 3ft firestick antenna for the radio .... as the antenna is much heavier ...

Hope that helps...

cheers

It definitely does! I'm still doing my homework on what exactly is needed for an antenna (grounding, material for the base, etc) but you pretty much answered my question perfectly. Thanks!

Firestik has a hood channel mount that is pretty low impact

MK-174 Hood Channel Mini Kit

Not sure if it would work with the FJC hood or not. I have used it on other vehicles.

I don't want to go that route because it doesn't look as clean as the way Baz or Nestah have done it on their rigs. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Great looking install, I've always favored Diamond Antennas! If I may verify..... is that the "Bandi" mount? Thanks
It was made for me by someone locally here in the UK but is the same style as the Boztec and Bandi mounts. Also check out GZilla designs he's just started doing them from billet aluminium..very nice

I like it. I have been looking for something similar but need it for my quad band Yaesu vx8
I think most of the club guys here (who know about this stuff... I definitely don't) reckon you're better off with two separate antennas linked so you can switch between them. My Yaesu is quad band but only got the 2m/70cm antenna for now.

Thanks for responding! This gives me a place to start in my quest to find the perfect mount for my specific application!
