BF Goodrich AT KO swapped for Silent Armor Pro Grade

I purchased 4 new BFG AT KO 10 ply "E" rated tires last week (265/75/16). These AT's had to be Road Force balanced twice and rotated once and the shimmy never went away. In addition to the shimmy the steering was erratic to the point of total frustration.

Discount Tire was happy to swap for something comparable so I chose the Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor Pro Grade 10 ply "E" rated tires. No more shimmy, no more steering issue. These tires are quieter and track straight.

My previous tires were M/T "D" rated tires. The M/T's and the BFG's felt rough especially over small bumps or road breaks. The Goodyear tires feel like a "C" rated tire, they absorb the small stuff very well. I also did a quick tactile comparison of the BFG and SA sidewalls when they were removed, the Silent Armor sidewall felt significantly more rigid.

Will update this thread as I put more miles on the Silent Armors.

**UPDATE**
Well I am dissapointed after 2 months with the Silent Armors, 3 of the 4 developed sidewall bubbles, took back to Discount Tire and now BACK to BFG AT KO's, this time though, I watched the balancing and had them go through 6 tires to get 4 that balanced properly. BFG's look better!!!!

JayFF,
I can confirm your findings, I to made the change to Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armors. They are smooth, quiet and my J_ _P Rubicon became much more 'driveable'. When the BF Goodrich T/As on my 2010 TTS wear-out I will be switching to the Silent Armors.

Aggressive tires are noticeable... that's just the nature of the beast. I've owned 3 or 4 sets of bfg ATs. Best tire I have had. I'll never buy another set of Goodyears after I saw many of them dissapear to nothing in short time on my Jips. IMO.... swapping the bfgs for those goodyears is like swapping your fj for a rav4.

i am a new member and can't for the life of me figure out how to start a thread! sorry to invade on yours, but have been reading up quite a bit on tires/wheels on the forum and ultimately think i'm going with the terra grapplers. i've read mixed reviews on tread wear on both the bfg a/t and nitto's a/t.
any help with starting a thread?

By all means let me give further evidence of the clear superiority of the Silent Armor over the BFG. My 2006 Ram 2500 4X4 now has 45,000 miles on Silent Armors with maybe 3000 miles of tread-wear left. I rotated at 6000 mile intervals and the tires have been flawless. Braking, cornering, hydro-planing, basically across the board performance has been outstanding with the silent armors. That being said, BF Goodrich has been manufacturing the AT for decades and to be bringing a tire to market that causes erratic steering and shimmy issues for so many consumers after that many years in the biz tells me that quality control is not a priority for that line, possibly for the entire BFG line.

I am sorry but it is just bad business to rely on heritage and brand recognition to sell badly built tires or any product for that matter, there are simply too many options out there. It is time for BF Goodrich to step up their game and build a quality product. Southwest Tire Shop here in Houston has dropped the BFG line from their product mix, too many unhappy customers.

I have driven on MT's and AT's over the years and none of them were as "noticeable" as these BFG's

My interest in posting information on this forum is to bring "UNBIASED" real-world information to the forum members and the market at large. This thread tells me that some of us are emotionally attached to brand names to the point they are willing to cast insults on those who dare to put the smack down on sub-standard and over priced products. Or maybe some of us work for BF Goodrich.

I am assuming you are only referring to onroad?

The reason, IMO, that the BFG tends to steer on its own with cracks in the road way occasionally is due to the sharp corners of the tire. Passenger car tires are much more rounded and don't have this behavior. Even mud terrains shoulders normally have lugs that vary in height and are usually somewhat more rounded than the BFG ATs. I have not experienced these shimmys you are referring to though.

Can you please show me the quote where someone insulted you??? Let me know and i will edit their post. The only thing i found was VT_Rainman making a comment that going to the silent armors from the BFGs was a down grade.

It's sounds more like you work for GoodYear ;)

Ok so my fj came with the bfg at great tire imo does everything I ask it to do but I wanted a bigger tire and a mud terrain so I went with the bfg km2 still imo i think a great tire both had a little shimmy but nothing bad ,I rotated the km2 after 5000 miles using the spare in the rotation I did this myself no change and how the fj rode, yesterday I took fj in for a rotation and tire balance didnt notice anything different but later I got on the highway and the thing was shaking so bad I thought the wheels were gonna fall off pulled into to the tire shop and they rebalanced them this was a different shop but some company, they said the tires where all out of balance ,rebalanced and on my way get up to 50 mph and the shaking was worse went back and they road forced them and said they where all bad and put a new set on ,these tires had less than 10,000 miles on them ,I had them check the spare also and it was ok. I dont get how the tires can be fine until they get rebalanced but with new tires the fj drives great go figure .

Dude, paragraphs, punctuation and capitalization are your friends.

I like my Goodyear Duratracs.

I had the same issue... slight shimmy at speeds over 50... 60mph was very noticeable. No road force balance could ever fix it.... turns out my alignment was out.

Because these tires have, as Layonn put it, "sharp corners" or square outer lugs. Which are great for traction when you need it. But, anyway... if your alignment is off even a little bit... these tires will make it seem a lot more. Then you put on some cozy soft tires... and voila! You don't feel it anymore. Doesn't mean it's not there. Just means your tires will prematurely wear out on you. I drove my bfg at's, after this problem was fixed with an alignment, for over 50k miles and had well over half the tread left. I even sold them for $50 bucks a piece. I still see him driving around with them on his truck. So, do me a favor and tell me how awesome your goodyear tires are after 50k miles.

They just are not in the same class of tire. Sorry... but I know it to be true. But, if you are happy... that's all that matters. So, never mind me.

BFG AT KO "D" load range. Coming up for 50,000. No complaints on or off road.

After reading many reviews, it seems that a lot of others have experienced what I am going through. My FJ is currently sitting at the local Discount Tire store for the 4th time in a month. They cannot get the BFG A/T KOs to balance. They blame them on my new wheels (Pro Comp) but they couldn't get them right even with the factory Toyota wheels. They claim it is a Toyota issue, not a BFG issue. My alignment's correct (I have seen the computer readings), as I have had it done twice. This particular shop claims they won't sell wheels/tires to FJ owners because of this issue. Which is bull. I'm sure if an FJ owner drove in with $2000, they'd slap a set on there quick! I am planning on requesting they do an exchange for some Cooper STTs since I understand they are a cross between an AT and MT.

Thanks to all of you Blue Room posters for sharing your invaluable knowledge/experiences.

Cooper STT's are bad a$$! Do it if you can! I just drove with a guy with a set of 35's on his taco this past weekend at highways speeds and then a little light offroad. Phenominal!!! Not the offroad... but the onroad! They had just the slightest hum. I couldn't even tell the tires were making any noise with the radio on low enough that we could hear ourselves talking. He had about 10k miles on them. They looked like they were still new.

hey how are the goodyear silent off-road mud rocks sand dirt vs the BFG AT. my boss recommends the goodyears but i have always had bfg over the km2 great tire but i dont need a mud tire with all the freeway driving and the not so much off-roading :( school and work take up to much time.

Glad you posted this. I want to update on this thread regarding the Silent Armor Pro Grades I swapped a while back. BUYER BEWARE! After 2 months of use, 3 of my 4 Silent Armors had developed sidewall bubbles, these are not where the plys tie in together, these were bubbles, all three were located in the same spot, on top or outside edge of the oval "Pro Grade" insignia. Took back to Discount Tire they replaced immediately with BFG AT KO's 285/75/16's. I am very happy with them this time, however I had to watch them balance the BFG's and actually went through 6 tires to get 4 that would balance properly, but they look and feel good, not as quiet or grippy as the Silent Armors but I feel more confident with the BFG's.
