Cost to replace left front CV Boot?

My FJ has 168,000 miles on it and at my oil change today the dealer told me my left front CV Boot was leaking a bit and quoted me a price of $470.00 to repair it.
Is this a fair price, or should I shop around to some independents.
I haven't a clue.
Please don't suggest that I do it since I'm a crippled 74 year old cancer survivor and anymore just drive them and leave the repairs and service to the professionals.

Thanks,

Logansky

If they are replacing the whole axle complete with inner and outer cv's and boots.... (which I would recommend as it's easier), then I would say it's not a bad price from a dealer.
The whole thing just pops right out once they have the tire off and things moved out of the way....

I actually just finished in Toyota for the same thing... Today found that my driver side outer CV boot is broken and the passenger side inner CV boot is broken... Guess for over 2 weeks and I just didn't notice till now

But, just for the set of both CV boots they ask for around 70 USD...

So I think it's very expensive 470 for the replacement of the CV boot they gave u, no?!?

Maybe check elsewhere to make sure

Those axles are 100 bucks from an auto parts store like kragen, autozone etc. Very simple repair, I’d say call around first and see if you can get a little better price.

I agree, oem axles are certainly stronger. You could always keep the OEM axles and have it rebooted at a local tranny shop. Cost me around 70 bucks I think when I brought just the axle in, parts and labor.

I think a number of people are making the assumption that $470 includes replacement of the CV axle. The OP has NOT indicated what is included for the $470. His exact words were:

"$470.00 to repair it"

I interpret "repair" being that they will remove it, grease it, put a new boot and boot clamps on it....nothing more.

the book more than likely says 3.5 - 4hr job. at about $100/hr parts, labor and taxes. Like front wheel bearings. The 1st and only time I took my fj to toyota to install pre-pressed bearings they charged me $750(if I recall correctly) for a job I know only took them 1.5-2 hours. Just the bearings, not the dust seals on the spindles. $750 because that's what the book said.
