This may have been covered, but I am looking on some recent owner input on the FJ vs. Xterra. I have read many of the reviews and currently have an FJ (2008 TI offroad) for work. I just don't have any real world experience with the Xterra and we are looking at getting another FJ or perhaps the Xterra...

reliabilty and build quality
off road capability
onroad noise levels
gas mileage
comfort
storage
towing

Thanks all!

You know to each his own! thats the great thing Know your rigs weakness every rig has something.

We all are on forums or clubs togo wheeling, becuse thats what its about. or even just moding rigs for street.

So diffrences aside Gofast I think your pretty smart.

3" Radflo suspension, 1" Toytec body lift. 16x8 0 backspace and 315/75/16's or 35"
The Radflo came with bumpstop extensions, after wheeling Payette draw last weekend I discovered I can probably shave off about 3/4" off my bumpstop extension, to get slightly more stuff in the rear

Here it is at full droop

Here's where I see another 3/4" without rub

Also running 4.56 gears that are still slightly lower than stock

Now let me ask a stupid question, what kind of gas mileage do you get on the highway? I dont drive alot of city so that doesnt really matter so much.I drive a busy highway that if your not doing 75 you will get run over even by the cops. Yes I like acceleration so regearing would be necessary

The only time regearing really helps on the highway, is on hills. My trans doesn't hunt quite as much now that I am re geared. actually if you drive it careful, you can get better gas mileage without regearing. Lower rpm= less fuel But you may need more peddle, against the wind. It depends on how you drive and where you drive to what type of results you would get with or without gears. I wanted my power back . I'm glad I regeared.
thanks

Ok. My truck is heavy with all of my mods. I also drive 75-80 on the highway.
I get about 13-14. Usually I am driving to an event, loaded with travel stuff.
With a trailer about 11 .
Of course, I didn't buy it for mileage.

Thats the part the sucks, 60 miles a day right now, but when someone offers you 5k more a year and was already driving that far anyways, you just suck it up. When I bought the X it came with free oil changes for life, bet they didnt plan on someone like me that drives 300+ miles a week. Maybe 35" are the best idea huh?

Sometimes they have small print that says free oil changes for life*

*Maximum of 4 oil changes a year

Glad you got one that didn't do that!

^Hey bud you also have to remember that theres a Toyota infront of the FJ marque. Which means better everything than us Nissan fella's. As far as aftermarket goes. I mean hell, im going to be putting my truck in as a test vehicle for a "New" 4" intake & 87-90mm throttle body. So the company making it can see realworld test results. All in the name of something new & competitive.

With the exception of some of the posts that make you feel like the baby sitter fell asleep there is some great info here.

My wife has a 2005 Xterra that I drive a lot for family trips. I have a 2008 FJ with everything I thought I would need for cross country operations to include the extra fuel tank.
Both are automatic, the x gets much better mileage and is faster out of the stop and I have to be careful when driving it not to get stopped. It is better than the FJ for visibility even thought the ride has a truck like feel with the handling being pretty good.
The FJ is mine and it is the vehicle I have wanted or a long time. I started with a 4-runner in 85 and was amazed at the places I could go where others could not. I have had the FJ on trails south of Joshua Tree National park almost al the way to Yuma before cutting over to the Sultan sea. It is a very impressive machine.
I think the bottom line both are great vehicles it is just up to the user and the use to make the choice.
