Speedometer not working

My speedometer and odometer stopped working. All other gauges work fine. I have 3 dash lights on, brake, abs and the traction light. I replaced the speed sensor but it did not fix the problem. I disconnected the battery for a few minutes hoping that might help but nothing. Using my cheep scanner the only codes that come up are evap codes. Driving with scanner plugged in 0 mph speed shown on scanner. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Robert

Ok, your original trans speed output sensor was probably not at fault. Since the ABS and Traction Control dash lights are on, there must be a trouble code indicating that one of the rear ABS wheel speed sensors has a problem. You need to see if you can have the trouble code read for you with a better OBDII reader. That code will tell you which side of your FJ has the faulty ABS sensor and/or a wiring problem to that sensor. Then we can work from there.

What year FJ and do you remember the mileage before the odometer went blank?

I'm going to suggest that a front wheel ABS sensor is more likely to fail than a rear.

At 350K miles, have you checked both front wheel bearings for play or looseness? The magnetic encoder ring for the wheel speed sensors is an integral part of the wheel bearing, and any defect in the bearing can affect the spacing of the encoder to the sensor.

Also, has there been any recent work done on the front suspension? The extension cable between the front sensors and the main wiring harness can easily be damaged if it gets stretched or stressed during suspension work, if a tree branch gets caught up between a front wheel and the suspension, etc.

Auto or manual? I think they pick up speed readings from different locations, manual is from back of T case I think?

I had a broken wire to the rear diff and that caused all the issues described above, on my automatic FJ.
