Hey guys,

I accidentally spilled coke on my center console:crying, most of it landed in the shifter pocket (6MT) so it was easy to clean up but some of it landed where the HVAC controls are and where the buttons for the rear locker, sub, etc are.

Here is what's wrong now:

1. The rear window defroster button is stuck on. I don't know if just the light is on or if the defroster is on as well but I can't get it to turn off.

2. The AC button and the circulate air button are linked. If I turn on one it turns the other on and vice versa.

Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Ryan

I would pull the switch's and clean with rubbing alcohol let them dry and see what still works and don't. The alcohol will dry by itself and not cause any problems by it self. The faster you get this done the better off you are coke is great at eating away at metal and the sugar in it is great at sticking things together.

It's really easy to take that stuff apart. At the bottom of the thin silver molding on either side of the radio/hvac panel is a screw. Remove it then pull outward and upward from the bottom and the silver pieces will pop off. Then remove the screws that hold the radio/hvac panel, disconnect all the wiring harnesses and it's free. Take it out and spray it clean with a can of electrical contact cleaner. Then with that removed, you can try to pop out and clean the switches on the lower panel too. I'm not sure if they'll pop out on the front or back but once it's out just bundle a towel underneath and spray it too. Try to do the wiring harness too. If you need to remove the lower switch panel, you'll want to remove the center console first, then I think it's a combination of screws/bolts on the front and the push pin on the sides.

Would follow Hemi's suggestion above. If not on hand; can get electronic contact cleaner at Radio Shack. Good luck :bigthumb: !

Good luck.

As said above clean everything up good with rubbing alcohol. I doubt you would have any problem with electrical contact cleaner but I tend to try and avoid that kind of stuff around plastic. I doubt there is any damage from a little coke my guess is that the switch is stuck due to the sticky nature of coke.

Good luck.

usually when i spill my coke i ditch the old rolled up dollar and get an xl milkshake straw from a fast food rester aunt then i proceed to snort through the straw in all the crevises as to not waste any of my columbian gold!:bandit:
jk, but really you should be fine using rubbing alcohol

Wow, thanks everyone for the quick responses! I'll get the console taken apart and cleaned out with rubbing alcohol and report back!

As a side note, unrelated to the coke spill, my rear windshield washer fluid doesn't work. I have plenty of fluid but when I try it the wiper starts but no fluid comes out. Any ideas there?

I have seen the electrical contact cleaner eat plastic and make it a real mess, so test an area first before just blast spraying it. Rubbing Alcohol is cheaper and easier to get and I have not seen it hurt plastic yet. As all ways test a piece first and see if it gets gooey if not use away.

A short on the Max A/C setting would cause the problem that you are seeing with the re-circulation being linked to the A/C switch. When Max A/C is selected, I believe the re-circulation is automatically turned on. In any case, cleaning the electronic components should fix it. I would recommend buying a spray can of electronics cleaner rather than simply using alcohol though.

Hmm this one is a sticky one, ha ha.....I think everyone is giving good advice, depending on how much actually got into the switches or how much is just gumming up the surrounding plastic. Take the switch out and clean the surface area, I would use an old tooth brush and some clean water and a rag keep a shop vac handy and suck the water off almost immediately then us a spray can of electronic cleaner. Iso alcohol is great but it may/will remove any of the factory grease. Take your time using a step by step process should work ......Even if you get some water in the switch it should be fine if left to dry completely. I doubt those switches have circuit boards in them just contacts only so not as sensitive to a little water.
Good luck.

SODA POP IS NOT ELECRICAL CONTACT CLEANER SOLUABLE!!! Rubbing alcohol maybe but
warm water is your friend here.... take the switches out and run warm water over them and into them, then use a blow dryer to get them dried out.... I have dealt with many a soda pop spilled car stereo front PCB and as long as you get things warmed up enough for the water to evaporate it always turns out well....
Time is of the essence as well but it usually takes days for anything to start getting eaten...

On your rear window washer, actuate the rear washer and have someone listen for the washer pump motor in the right front corner of your FJ. Both the front and rear washer motors are located in the washer fluid bottle under your hood... it's a good place to start...

Good luck!

Not to be argumentative, but "electrical contact cleaner is simply compressed air with a cleaning agent that evaporates, such as isopropyl alcohol. It is useful for cleaning electric components that have food, grease, or oils on them. It can dislodge foreign elements and clean components." (HowStuffWorks, 2014)

Got it fixed!! Thanks everyone for all the suggestions! I ended up taking the Center console apart and cleaning out all the contacts and the circuitboard for the HVAC with isopropyl alcohol. Not sure what ended up fixing it but there was some Coke on the circuit board around the ribbon connector.

Thanks again for everyone's help! That's why this forum is the best bar none. Now to figure out my rear windshield washer fluid

There have been worse "sticky" situations...
