:thinkerg:

If you've done this, post up. While i haven't it does seem like a lot of members here have so let's all get a lesson in humility, in good fun. Tell us your story, and how you fixed it.

Here is how to do it properly. with video!

Re: The "I accidentally drained my transmission instead of my engine" thread

I just got my FJ and haven't needed an oil change yet. Can someone post a pick of which plug is the oil pan drain so I don't have to post a second thread here about my stupidity?

Like Dragon mentions in his post right below yours, look for the black plastic oval that is removable. Pull it off and the drain plug for the oil is right there. For an easy alternative, get a Fumoto oil drain valve...the F-103 is the one we need for the FJ. I have been using one for over 2 years now with no trouble and makes changing the oil EASY!! You can get them at qwikvalve or even on ebay.

Re: The "I accidentally drained my transmission instead of my engine" thread

I drained a half of a coffee cup full out and got the plug back in when I saw red instead of oil colored. :slant: I never said I was smart. I took it to Toyota and they topped it off, but that is not an easy process (perfectly level, up to a certain temp, etc). This was when I still had that little plastic oval "skid plate" over the oil drain plug. :( I just loosened the tranny plug without thinking and obviously without looking. :slant:

Re: The "I accidentally drained my transmission instead of my engine" thread

Dumb question: How often do I have to change the transmission oil? I never change engine's oil myself, the dealer does the job for approx. $74 :lookaround:
The manual shows it as a 100K mile service. But if you tow or run much larger tires, and put more stress on the drive train, 60K would be a good time.

Re: The "I accidentally drained my transmission instead of my engine" thread

I've never done this, but I can certainly understand how it could be done.

We all do stupid things once and a while...its what makes life fun !
It's above the black, plastic oval plug that you have to pop out with a screwdriver. The oval plastic plug is right below the engine. You really can't miss it. There's only one bolt that you can access above that oval hole in the skid plate and it is the oil drain plug.

Re: The "I accidentally drained my transmission instead of my engine" thread

I am guilty. I did it on my Tacoma though AND it was actually on my SECOND oil change so I should have known better. I only allowed a very small amount of tranny fluid to escape. I just went to the dealer, bought some more fluid and replaced it. The dealer told me you couldnt just replace a small amount of fluid, that you needed to have them drain the entire tranny and refill it. I didnt and it ran fine.

Re: The "I accidentally drained my transmission instead of my engine" thread

I definately WOULD have drained the ATF if I didn't have a home-made skid covering the bolt...which made me notice the engine plug where the factory skid has a cut out. I thought, crap I've got to take this skid off, which would have been a pain how I attached it, and then laid under there for a while not wanting to do all the work ahead. That's when I looked around and noticed the right plug.

Re: The "I accidentally drained my transmission instead of my engine" thread

Here is mine...originally posted last summer, cut and pasted from original post:
:)

It is a matter of pride and satisfaction in knowing that a job is done the right way. That is why I faithfully change the oil in all of our family's vehicles instead of trusting it to Junky Lube or the dealership. Today, as a right of passage, I invited our 11 year old to help out with the oil change on the FJ.

I talked him through, step by step, going over details before we even started. Here is where the filter is located; this is a filter wrench; the oil pan will be located here, etc.

He was literally crawling out of his skin in excitement as we started, first removing the old filter and then crawling underneath the vehicle.

Then my phone rang, and being on call, I had run inside to answer it, as I had left my cell inside. I climb from under the FJ, tell my son to do the same, and to not touch anything.

Well, ten minutes later, I come out and see him beaming with excitement. He had "drained the oil himself, just like I had explained to him earlier". I get under the FJ and see that the plastic oval cover is still in place and that the oil collecting pan was sitting under the transmission.

Yep. He drained the transmission fluid. Looks like the FJ just earned a tow-ride to the dealer to get the fluid replaced.

I guess it is payback karma for when I was about the same age and somehow managed to spill cooking oil on my dad's brand new felt cowboy hat. He looked at me, patted me on the shoulder and said, "Son, don't worry about it, it just gives it character". My mom later told me (when I was an adult) that it really bothered my dad that his new (and expensive for us) hat was ruined.

Little did I know that it would take 30 years for me to realize the "character" that he was speaking of had little to do with the stain, and much more to do about "true" character.

All of that flashed back to me in an instant and I patted my son on the shoulder, told him to go inside, and that I would finish and clean things up.

My dad has been gone for 25 years now, but I am sure that he is getting a chuckle out of today's events.

And yeah...one more thing. Little man still has a LOT to learn about listening, obeying, and oil changes. He also has a bit of good natured ribbing coming his way in a few years when he is old enough to understand just what he did...lol.

Well, at least the little bugger isn't dealing crack to other kids his age. Or stealing cars. Or .... you get the idea

You can try to refill it yourself if you carefully follow the shop manual section, which I've attached

If you decide to have it towed, it MUST be flat towed. The auto trans FJ Cruiser cannot be towed with just the front wheels on the ground.

Looks like we got a new inductee into the club. ;)

Re: The "I accidentally drained my transmission instead of my engine" thread

I did it too. no excuse bad day for my brain. I fixed it by jamming a Endotracheal tube up into the overfill port, inflating the cuff then pumping fluid up into the pan with a 60cc syringe.....no idea how else to fix it. I need to do the flush now.

Re: The "I accidentally drained my transmission instead of my engine" thread

I did it on my '96 4runner.

It was my first oil change on this particular rig. I crawled underneath, found the plug, loosened it and watched for a bit as the fluid poured out. It was dark underneath so I couldn't tell what color the fluid was...not that I was looking at fluid color anyway.

After about 10-15 seconds, I crawled out from the 4Runner to wait for it to finish. I looked down at my hands...red. Sh*t.

Luckily my dad was home at the time, I went upstairs, started laughing and said...guess what I did.

He went to the auto parts store, picked up some ATF and all was fine. Lesson learned though

Re: The "I accidentally drained my transmission fluid instead of my engine oil" threa

Wow, I just did this on my FJ today! I've done the oil change 20 times at least and just tried to rush through it today. The bad news is I didn't realize it till 10 minutes later when I was on the road and it slipped from 1st to 2nd. I drove 10 miles or so with it. Plus on top of that I put an extra 5 quarts of Mobil 1 synthetic in it, thinking the previous oil had drained!

I read that the overflow valve only drains about 1 quart or so. Did I just ruin my tranny or engine? Its sitting at the dealership now for a full flush and fill. No more doing my car work hung over...

Re: The "I accidentally drained my transmission fluid instead of my engine oil" threa

I think you will be alright. Only way to know will be more driving once it it all properly filled! Only downside is that it sounds like the DEALER knows what you did, in worst-case something were to go wrong (even if unrelated)

I personally wouldn't worry though

Re: The "I accidentally drained my transmission fluid instead of my engine oil" threa

One time, on my daughters 2005 Corolla, we had a big fight about her not giving me time to service her car, (which I own BTW), I rushed and opened the wrong plug. As soon as I saw the red fluid dripping out from the loosened plug, I tightened it back up. I then added just a little TF to make up. I kept thinking about some old commercial where the mechanic has red fluid falling all over his head as he goes to do an oil change, I forget which one that was!:jester:

The worst such stupid F-Up I did was years ago, I had bought a new battery for my wife's car, and she rushed me and fought with me as usual, after a being putting me in a bad mood over something. Guess what..I put it in wrong ways and blew most of the fuses. THAT, I will never do ever again!!:flame: She had plenty of time to cool down then!!

Re: The "I accidentally drained my transmission fluid instead of my engine oil" threa

I did this. I drained most of the fluid, and added double the amount of oil to the motor. I didn't realize what had happened until I had drove 600 miles round trip to go camping. Got home, bought fluid and added some. Drained the oil, and my FJ still runs great. Its a tank. I realized what had happened because it started mis shifting and rumbling. I was very lucky.
