ok, question. haha, I'll start with a statement then work my way into the question I guess. All years of Tundra have a coolant line off the water pump leading into the throttle body. Does the FJ have this as well?? I'd bet a dollar that it does
Most OEM's use this to keep the throttle body from freezing open and sticking. If you insulate you intake tube any benefit would be stolen by the throttle body.
On the Tundra forums we've come to the conclusion that you may bypass the throttle body coolant year round if you live south of the Mason/Dixon line. If North of the line you should re-connect in early fall just to be safe.
I've had my 03 Tundra in Big Bear sub freezing weather and totally forgot about the coolant bypass in my throttle body, no freezing but it's a scary thought.
My intake is actually cold to the touch after climbing a long grade no matter the outside temp, and no matter the underhood temps. That engine is displacing 4.7L of air every full revolution of the engine, at 2500 rpm hat's a lot more cold air than underhood hot air.
It's really easy to do a coolant bypass, you just unplug the small hose leading to the throttle body and plug it into where the throttle body normally goes back into the water pump....if that makes sense hhaaha
