Anyone have a GIANT Dog?

Hello, first post after lurking around a bit.

I am looking at buying a new FJ. Just wondering if anyone out there has a giant breed dog, and if so, how well do they fit in there? I have a 200 lb. St. Bernard who's getting a bit long in the tooth. Doesn't fit in my old YJ (it's hilarious watching him try to squeeze in). Kinda fits in my Xterra, but doesn't like to jump in or out. I'm thinking the suicide doors will help him when climbing in; i figure it's this or an Element, which is low to the ground; but the FJ is so much cooler and more awesome...

thanks in advance for your advice!

we have a 180lb St bernard and she loves hopping in the back seat and sitting there watching the world go by

FJ + Seats Folded down + Pet Ramp = WIN!

That's the one special thing about dogs - they don't care. As long as they get to go with ya they're excited.

Siberian Husky...I am sorry...I used to raise them and if you got two Siberian Husky's that weigh 150 apiece...they are not full blooded siberians or they are wider than they are tall....even a damn Malmute does not get that heavy if they are overweight.

You sure they dont have wolf or something else in them...Akita or something bigger? Especially since avg weight of male Siberian Husky in avg shape is like 65lbs with females being in the 45-50lb range. They could not run 5 miles much less 100 miles at that weight and size....

My two Golden Retrievers (totaling about 180 pounds) absolutely love the FJ with the seats down. I put a rubber liner cut to fit the bed and the back of the seats when folded down...gives the dogs some traction and protects everything from drools to dog hair. Anyway, they much prefer jumping in through the wide swing-out door, vs. my pickup with the tailgate and camper shell. The FJ is made for dogs IMO.

x2 on the mat.

I bought a few feet of anti fatigue matting at lowes and cut to fit the shape over the backs of the seats. Works well and the dog is no longer sliding and falling on the hard plastic.

I have two Labs, girl 65lbs., boy 125lbs. I put the back seats down and throw a 3'x4' area rug in the back so they don't slide around on the plastic part. They love it.

"Buga" sits in the front with me. He's 138lbs Neo Mastiff, he could careless about the ride as long as he lays over on my shoulder or leg. He hates the back area, but tolerates the back seat. The photo in my sig line he's about 80lbs.:rofl:

My dog, Magnum, is only 22 lbs, (so why am I posting here? lol)...but he loves the FJ. He rides in the passenger seat and sticks his head out the window and lays his "chin" on the mirror. Only prob is that the FJ seats are slippery so sometimes he slides around unless I remember to put a towel on the seat. Hopefully once I get some seat covers he will have more traction.

i'm in the process of getting an FJ and i had a 24 hour test drive yesterday and my pup (120lb German Shepherd) fit back there very well with the seats folded down! part of the reason i want the FJ is so i can spray his fur out of the truck!!

He was a pound dog. Definitely mostly German Shepherd, maybe a little husky, or akita, malinois, or maybe wolf (the area he was rescued from was Pahrump, Nevada which at the time he was found was having a huge problem with people crossing German Shepherds with wolves).

He is really an awesome dog. Very sweet. Very loyal. :bigthumb:

He is very sweet, but he can definitely be intimidating. When he stands up on his hind legs to lick my face, he looks me right in the eye. I'm about 5'8.

He loves riding in the back of the FJ more than anything in the world, especially if the back window is open!

I agree. That Springtail barrier is the best mod I have done so far. Keeps the German Shepard and the Pit in the cargo area. If you have dogs, the Springtail is a must. Previously I had one of the adjustable pet barriers that you wedge between the floor and the roof. Constantly was coming loose because the knucklehead dogs kept knocking into it. Not an issue with the springtail. :bigthumb:

Wow that Springtail Barrier looks sturdy! But it's a bit too industrial looking for my needs, I just raise the 3 rear headrests whenever the dogs are in back and they stay put. If I leave them down they jump in the rear seat area, which is fine except they are so exicted they never lay down and it is not as safe on the seats as in the cargo area.

My two shepherds do fine. The female likes the floorboard, while my male likes to pretend he's a person and sit shotgun. Really funny cause he just looks forward... doesn't do the head hanging out of the window thing. Just sits just like a person lol. At some point I plan on making a custom memory foam pad to fill the entire back with the seats down.

I don't have a giant dog at the moment but I am considering a Dane or a Burmese Mountain Dog and I think it would work fine, for sure with back seats down.

Current dog is 53 lbs and if in regular dog carting mode I fold down the seats and put a Kirkland pet bed back there with a mat underneath. I also bought a seat belt thing that is a harness and ties to a zip line clipped between the back seat attatch points when the seats are down or can clip to the seat belt when he's riding shotgun. (Read about too many horror stories in accidents and dogs going through windshields and what not) Also keep's him in a radius of his bed when he's in doggie first class. ;)

Seat belt harness is made by Kurgo.
