Scangauge II Transmission Temperature display

Hi guys,

A question from down under... I have a 2008 120 series Toyota Prado 4L V6 auto which I believe shares many running gear components as the FJCruiser you guys have in the US.

I use the Prado primarily to tow a 2 ton tandem axle caravan (trailer?), and have had a Scangauge II ver 3.15 installed for some time now. This gives me a lot of good real time data, and helps make sure I don't get stranded out the back of beyond. One thing it doesn't do though, is display automatic transmission oil temperature. I have no reason to suspect the Prado doesn't capture it, but just getting it displayed via the Scangauge is another matter.

Have any of you guys been able to display this data as a Scangauge x-gauge in your FJCruisers, or maybe there is someone there with a 120 series Prado who has been able to do this? If so, can you let me know the gauge setup codes please? I have e-mailed Linear-Logic, but have not had a response at this stage.

Appreciate your help with this one.

Cheers

Ga Day Mate. I don't believe the SGII can be set up with an X-gauge for tranny temp. At least not on the FJ. The OBDII won't support it. As for the OBDII on the Prado I'm not sure. I'll check and get back to you.

it is for most of the country. Other vehicles out there will show tranny temps. I have heard most toyota's cannot display this feature. Kind of sucks.

Toyota is generally 'up there', so I would expect someone, somewhere.... may have worked it out indpendently.

What i think you are thinking, is that someone just needs to figure out the code to read what the ECU knows.

To my knowledge, there is no temperature reading device of any kind on the FJ's transmission. Only a pressure gauge.

Greg, on a side note. I worked in Australia back in 1998 building a 288 MW power plant around Townsville, Queensland for a company called AES.

Hi Cogen Man, I guess a stint in Townsville would have given you an appreciation of how big this place is. Nice part of Aust, close to the reef and other attractions... but a bit hot for some. Hope you enjoyed your stay and were well looked after.

Layonnn, spoke with my automotive service man today and he said that the Prado reports trans temp when he plugs his diagnostic machine into the OBDII port, but apart from that he couldn't help much with how the SGII interprets it. Obviously one of the diffeences between the FJ and the Prado.

Gotcha, yeah i don't know much about the Prado's. Do they use the exact same transmission?

There is a temperature sensor in the FJC A750E & F auto trannies, as the temp. must be in the correct range to check the ATF level. There is a Toyota Special Service Tool (# 09843-18040) that connects to diagnostic port DLC3 (pin-out looks suspiciously like the OBDII) to read it. Or, per the FSM, you can short terminals 4 and 13 on the plug and the "A/T OIL TEMP" light in the dash will light when the temp reaches 115* F and blink when it exceeds 130* F (the range to check the fluid level in).

More information than you wanted to know for your application, but the point is, yes there is an auto tranny temp. sensor and function, it's just getting ScanGauge or anything else to access what is already there.

If anyone can figure out the code sequence, please post it up. I'll add it to the program that I wrote for diagnostics.
If anyone has access to the scan tool at the dealership, let me know - I have some tools we can use to intercept the entire conversation and reverse engineer it to get the codes.
We just need physical access..

Regarding Trans Temp readings on a ScanGauge :

Cloudcap posted this (Post #16) in the following thread : http://www.fjcruiserforums.com/forum...ge-xgauge.html

FYI, I've had a ScanGauge II for a few months and recently puzzled out the XGauge codes for measuring automatic transmission fluid temperature. Here's the scoop:

TXD: 686AF101B4
RXF: 044105B40000
RXD: 2808
MTH: 00090005FFD8

I've verified that this works with my '02 4Runner and suspect that the codes would work with an FJCruiser as well (even though the FJ is a *much* less capable off-road vehicle....). Please let folks know if you try it and it works for you. I'm not a regular reader of this forum, but wanted to pass the info along as it seems to be of general interest.

Regards

I don't have a Scanguage so I can't confirm/deny if these work or not.

If these addresses do not work, you need to contact scanguage to upgrade the version of the flash you have.

That is what I had to do. These addresses work now on my 07 FJ

Your post is great and informative, but just FYI, this thread was from 2009 and the guy before you must have felt like stretching his forum legs with a pointless bump. :twak:
