Could the members who have installed either Y-pipes post here their feedback. How was the install? How well it holds-up? What was the performance gain? Did anyone tried to pass emission inspection with Y-pipe and what was the verdict (very interested if you can actually do it)? And other things you want to share....

OEM crush gaskets.

Very interesting. So DT is cheap and not worth $$.
I was thinking about URD, but DT was buying me for its $$ value. Now I can see that cheap is not good every time...
I was thinking the same thing when I bought the Pipe Bomb. Now I am regretting it. URD y-Pipe is the way to go.

The oem gaskets from Toyota will not work. I was told you have to use bigger ones from URD. I'm waiting on mine to get here, they forgot to send me them.
I was not expecting much since the y-pipe is just over $200. If it flows a little better, gives me a little more sound, then I will be happy.

I bought mine used from a member here.
I bought TWO NEW gasket from URD, and reused the rear OEM gasket- ZERO LEAK.
Had it on for 1 oil change (5k).

Install was pretty easy, PB blasted everything a few hours ahead. Everything came off easy and went on easy.
I did NOT reuse the OEM bolt and spring between the Y pipe and the exhaust, I went with a straight bolt. With the spring in I could not get them to pull close together for a seal.

RASP, I get it sometimes also. Sounds like those Honda Civic ghetto mufflers rasp (but quieter).

The AFE Trottle Body Spacer help reduced the rasp. (I just removed the TBS recently, the GF could not stand the whistling at that certain RPM).

Would I buy it again? YES and NO. New NO, used Yes. For the gain (feels like it freed up) and the gain in HP noise (wish there was NO rasp though).

Singha,

Glad you're semi happy with the Y pipe,
I too couldn't stand the never ending exhaust leaks, and the fact I ruined the 02 sensor when removing it from the stock Y pipe just made it worse... they are expensive!

#14 ·
You broke an O2 sensor...? Was it difficult to remove or there is a need for special tool?

#15 ·
It was just difficult to thread off. I too broke mines and it cost me $300 w/shipping. Mines stripped when I was trying to remove it. And I was told that I didn't let the exhaust cool off enough when I attempted to remove it. I broke it because I used a wrench along with a hammer to get it out. But all is well tho. Oh yea there is no special tool to remove that sensor.

Oh yea there is no special tool to remove that sensor.
Actually there is
Amazon.com: Lisle 12100 7/8" Oxygen Sensor Socket 3/8" Drive: Automotive

I removed my Y pipe. And put it in a vise, then sprayed PB Blaster and let soak in for an hour. Used the sensor socket. No problems.
Before I put the sensor back on I also lightly anti seized the threads on the sensor.
I have removed several Toyota sensor at work. Both my vehicle and my friends Tacomas (for replacement of bad sensors). With pretty much the above method (minus putting it in a vise) with ZERO Problems.
PB Blast is the secret.

PS lonelydriver, Thanx again.

Here is the scoop. The factory FJ crush gaskets do not work!! The gaskets we use are the same ones as the 4.7 L/C. We chose to do this to increase gasket surface area. We have had many leaking complaints due to U** selling oem gaskets as a fix. We have recently changed our design due to this and all new runs will now use oem FJ gaskets.
As far as rasp goes it is an inherent Toyota sound. I don't know why but when you free up the exhaust it makes this sound. We tried it with numerous different resonator designs(some not even our brand) and it still made the rasp. The only way to reduce it is leave the cats on or Go with a real quiet catback. Heck even the 5.7L Tundra does it a bit when you stab it. Our quality is top notch and the product DEFINATELY PERFORMS AND MAKES POWER it just was sold incorrectly.

Thanks
Nick

Man, am I glad I installed these now.
Just saw on the news, a local Toyota dealership (in Long Island NY) had a bunch of catalytic converters stolen from Toyota SUVs right off their lot. This is there third incident. They showed a few Fjs being a victim.
But from seeing it on the news, they removed them by unbolting them. Makes me think it's an inside job. SawSaw would be the more common method for a speedy removal.

Singha, did you say you put a gasket between where the Y-Pipe bolts up to the rear exhaust? I have the URD Y-Pipe and JBA catback and have a slight exhaust leak. Also hate the spring loaded bolts as I couldn't wrench them down far enough either. I ended up making some spacers, but if I recall correctly, there wasn't a gasket between these two sections on the stock set up. I have an extra gasket so I can always throw that in and hopefully it will help with my exhaust leak.

I do have a gasket between the y-pipe and my TRD muffler. I reused the oem gasket that was on there.
for you situation I would contact JBA to see what gasket they are using, oem or JBA gasket.

I tried to reuse the hardware from between the y-pipe and TRD exhaust, no luck. had leak. so I bought slightly longer bolts and several washers. that did the trick. no springs.

I had a easy install with the DT y-pipe, no problems with the O2 sensors as they were coated with high temp copper anti-size, I work at the honda plant in lincoln alabama and we do the same with ours, I reused my old gaskets and installed them with high temp gasket glue and have not had a worry since, used all the stock gaskets and hardware, but I did later cut out the big bend in the collector where it comes into one pipe and made true duals out of it, sound great like a small v8 at low to mid rpms, pulls betters at high rpms too but really no differance in mpg I get around 20-21 which is not bad for a 4-wheel drive I guess

After all the debates I've placed an order with URD.

As of last night, and 95ish mph of cruising on the freeway, the dash lights up and scanguage shows the code.. And what do you know! The leak is back. Now to weld the pipe in place on the right hand side. (left side is already welded due to the last horrible leak)

I have the URD Y pipe and have had no issues.......I also have the DT long tube headers and an AFE intake as well as the AFE High clearance cat back. I had issues with a blown manifold gasket and Im not sure if it was the installers fault or if re using the old gaskets caused the problem. The leak was only on the drivers side and some new gaskets and a compitent mechanic fixed the problem. I didnt install either the headers or the y pipe myself. URD sent gaskets for the y pipe and I assume that is what was installed on it. My better half says it is too loud now , but I like it. Definate high RPM HP gain.
So Bottom line is I am happy with my URD Y pipe.

I am very sorry there have been such problems with Doug Thorley Long Tube Headers and Doug Thorley Y pipe exhaust leaks. I feel we have a handle on this now.

The included Doug Thorley installation guide for the headers instructed the installer to reuse the stock gaskets and hardware. We knew that reusing a crush-to-seal gasket is never a good idea and we always recommended replacing the collector flange gaskets with new gaskets. They are available on our website so they can be ordered with the headers or the Y pipe.

We began getting a lot of complaints from our customers that installed the Doug Thorley Y pipe along with the long tube headers. The number of complaints concerned us. On my last trip out to California I looked into this problem to find the cause and solution to the problem.

So, I contacted Doug Thorley and asked if I could bring two of these leaky trucks to their facility for inspection. One truck was the well known FJ Cruiser owned by Air2Air and the other was the first customer to receive the Tacoma version of the Doug Thorley “Pipe Bomb.”

Once these systems were disassembled it was readily apparent what was causing the gasket failures. The recesses on the flanges for the gaskets had a much large diameter than the stock gaskets. Because of this the gaskets would not stay centered in the flange during assembly and could slide slightly out of position causing a leak.

The guys at Thorley & I agreed that an easy fix for the DT Y-pipe would be a gasket with the same inner diameter, but a larger outer diameter would be needed to keep the gasket centered in the flange recess during assembly.
Reusing the stock gaskets as suggested in the installation instructions is not going to work.

The larger gasket was installed in both of these trucks and the leaks disappeared. As far as I know the new gaskets are still working perfectly as we expected.

URD now has these larger gaskets in stock and they are available to anyone that needs them.

If you have the URD Y-Pipe the stock gaskets will still work fine. Our flange design on the URD Y Pipe has a centering tit that holds the gasket in place during assembly so it cannot slide out of position. If you have the URD Y pipe and stock manifolds we recommend the stock gasket. If you have the URD Y Pipe and the Doug Thorley Long Tube headers, the stock gasket will work, but it would better to use the new larger one. If you have the Doug Thorley Y Pipe and the Long Tube headers, you must use the larger diameter gasket.

Any customers that have purchased the Doug Thorley Long Tube Headers or the Doug Thorley Y pipe from URD (that have leaks), please contact URD for a free set of the correct gaskets (support@URDUSA.com). If you purchased the headers from Thorley or another vendor, URD has these on its website.

I recently installed the URD Y-Pipe and the URD 3" catback and I am really impressed with the quality of both. URD did not cut any corners with these products and are worth the money. Since install my friends have all asked my what I have done to the motor. Sounds very low and deep toned exhaust. Thank you URD.

I bought good crush gaskets from a local auto parts store. One of the O2 sensors was cross threaded, and i had to buy a new one, but again from the same auto parts store it was about $100. I've had no leaks and no problems. The URD y-pipe looks more durable since it is made out of a higher grade of metal-but in all honesty, it is an exhaust part! I'm not looking to chrome out and go all bling with those. The price was good, the performance increase was noticeable, and I have better FJ items to spend my money on than splurging on a top of the line y-pipe.

Where did you find a 200.00 y pipe, last I checked the URD was 469.00??
Please enlighten!!!!????

There is a URD y-pipe that is hi-quality stainless steel.
That is the one you saw.

There is a Doug Thorley y-pipe that is 189. It is aluminized metal. Search "doug thorley y-pipe" on here and you will find a bunch of info.
