I think before you can answer your question, you have to clarify just what the "FJ does" means.
I rented a pretty nice Jeep Wrangler while in Alaska and have no doubts of it's capabilities. However, I wasn't too enamored with the design and fit/finish. I prefer my FJ. The experience in Alaska did not involve crawling, just highway and dirt roads.

 

So, the ‘added’ things I listed and why we would ‘add’ those to begin with are essentially what “fj does” mean.

All jokes aside...I love my truck very much, and the community too(most times).

The body. Otherwise a 4runner suits most people's needs slightly better than an FJ. FJ can fit bigger tires slightly easier though and used to be on of toyota's only vehicles to come with a locker from the factory.

 

Okay for 2 things not added

 

RELIABILITY. But all the others can also do just as good if not maybe a little better specially the Jeep due to the front straight axle. But I will give up the articulation to be able to be worry free from breaking down and longevity.

 

It will outlast pretty much any other vehicles that were mentioned in this thread. Nothing else looks like it. I don`t want something everyone else has.

 

The reliability is selling

2008 Tundra owner here as well 160k miles no issues yet. Love Toyota products.

 

Now this for sure is something I’m not use to. I totally used to believe after 90k miles the car would begin breaking down to no return. Until I bout a Totoya. (Or my fathers 08 Honda as he only just parted with at 300k+ miles.) so this is point 3

 

Design is very unique. Simple, no crazy computerized instrumentation no keyless start. Just reliable easy to work on and built like a Sherman tank at least compared to most suvs made today.

 

It's reliable.

It's decent on road.
It's safe as hell.

Looking for strong arguments though

 

My first car was 1996 V6 Camry. Ran it for 385k. Only things ever swapped was one radiator, one spark plug coil, and one starter. Car ran like when I first bought it qith 70k. The person that bought it in 2009 could no believe it was original.

 

I really didn’t realize how reliable Toyota’s were, always thought that was Honda only.

What i like about is it's image. Or better the lack of it. It is not about "i wannabe part of, so i buy a Jeep/Landrover/or a Harley davidson" If you want to go shooting, build in a concealed weaponbox, want to do serious rock crawling, trailer a boat, go camping or only want to drive to the mall fully geared up with a high jack, Orange Maxtrax, spacers, 3"lift, BF's and zombielights, make it happen, and have some fun. Toyota FJ is a free man's truck.

 

Rear ended by a mini van. Zero damage to body. Rotated tires, checked the alignment and back to business.

Add that there weren’t many sold during their nine year run in the US, and you have a rarer vehicle. That combined with Toyota’s proven reliably, safety and resale makes many people covet them.
While there are other vehicles that can perform as well or maybe even better than the FJ. None will have it’s unique styling. And most would fall behind in other areas.

Here's one not mentioned.... Fits a big guy. We owned a 2007 4-Runner, the wife's daily driver..... and I hated that thing from a comfort standpoint. I am 6'4 and 250lbs and I was always cramped in the 4-Runner. In our FJ, we fight each other to drive it. It has so much more room.

 

Many different vehicles are capable, but without reliability it's a one way trip

If you do research, ask reputable mechanics, read consumer reports, etc you will find that Chrysler/Fiat is often at the bottom of the list and Toyota is at the top. There's a reason for that

Those stupid speaker exciters things above the headliner.... THAT'S the definition of "special"

 

TOYOTA!
On the FJ you can stuff 295-70-17 (almost 34") stock! NO LIFT (no money spent) or BMC cut. Yes you have to move the caster to + 3.5 but it works.

Once you have had to buy 3 jeeps or anything else non Toyota you'll get it. You can get it with a manual (and full time 4x4)
And of course they are just cool!
