I'm working a deal on a 2013 Magma and have the dealer agreeing to an OTD price of $31,500. MSRP is $33,923. It has an auto tranny with:

3T Roof Rack
9S Spare tire cover
AL - 17" alloy wheels
CF Carpet/mats
CQ Convenience
DH Towing receiver hitch
DL Locking rear differential
ES Exhaust tip
EL Passenger armrest
FE Emissions
OF Off-Road package.

We're still a couple thousand apart on my trade and I'm hoping I can get him up to where I feel good about it. Also, BUT most importantly, my wife is okay with all of this.

How do you guys feel about this????

Not a bad price. Try and get him up on that trade. Hopefully you will get it and you can join the club!! :bigthumb: Good luck.

If you can't get right price on your trade, tell them you are going to try to sell it yourself and hopefully they still have the FJ once it's sold. They will probably come up on the trade if they know you are going home.

also on Autotrader you can solicit offers from dealers for your trade in and they will email you an offer that you can print out and take in. You can use it as a bargaining chip. The only downside is the dealers will probably call you.

Don't rush the deal the year is just starting and there will be plenty of time to find the right deal.

3T Roof Rack - Dont need / Replace with a real rack (Baja or gobi @ $800+)
9S Spare tire cover - does it come with the backup camera? if not then you can scoop up a cover anywhere for chump change.
AL - 17" alloy wheels - 16" tires are cheaper
CF Carpet/mats - Crap mats IMHO get some husky slush liners @ aprox $150
CQ Convenience
DH Towing receiver hitch - If your changing the rear bumper this is damn near worthless IMHO.
DL Locking rear differential
ES Exhaust tip -Its only a tip save the coin for real acessories
EL Passenger armrest
FE Emissions
OF Off-Road package

We're still a couple thousand apart on my trade and I'm hoping I can get him up to where I feel good about it. Also, BUT most importantly, my wife is okay with all of this.

Added my notes. For that kind of coin you could very well get a trail team FJ. Otherwise get exactly the factory options you dont want to replace or install on it from the factory and spend the rest of your $$ on the parts you plan to or will replace.

Examples being.
Roof rack - aftermarket is way better than stock
Wheels and tires can be had anywhere for way less than the Toyota surcharge.
Tire covers are readily found here and craigslist etc for around 25 - 40 bux each.
Suspension and shocks are something to consider changing via aftermarket such as toytec etc. If you are even kicking around a lift in the back of your mind then I would definitely give this some real thought. Factory take off stuff is cheap and easy to find. Most everyone at lest goes for a leveling to 3" with spring and shock upgrades.
Toyota skids are nothing compared to what is offered aftermarket for a more than fair price.
Factory floor mats are crap for the price charged. Husky makes some very nice fitting and locking floor mats and and are hands down the way to go IMHO.
If your planning on going the route of aftermarket metal bumpers over the factory flex plastic then the towing package is moot. Most have their own required hitch that bolts up for around $100 +/- over the cost of the bumper in question. The rest of the electrical is easily obtained from the venders here.

Seriously though you can land a TT for around that kind of money with numerous upgrades. Shop around a bit and tell your seller just what your doing and why. :)

I agree with "That Guy":rofl::rofl:

Ditch the roof rack, spare tire cover, hitch, tip, and carpet mats, they are dealer installed.

16" is way better than 17" 1. cheaper 2. from what I read, better traction when you air down for off-road 3. same tire height, but more sidewall

Also, that OTD price, it only seems low because of how much they will make off your trade. You can probably at least count on them making 4K on your trade (price between trade and what they sell it for retail).

KNOW your trade's retail value, and then work on that trade value, this is where dealers always make it seem like you are getting a deal when they are ripping you off.

For instance, your OTD is $2400 off MSRP, if your trade price is $17K, but retail is $25K, then you just paid approx $3500 over MSRP (taking $2K as the difference between retail and 3rd party (what you would be able to sell to an individual). If you trade, you're going to loose at least the difference between trade value and 3rd party value (check out Kelley Blue Book). The last 3 vehicles I checked for myself had about a $4K difference between trade and retail, so its a safe bet to say the dealer is making $4K on your trade.

I'll disagree with 16" being "way better" than a 17". Items 1 & 2 can be the complete opposite, all depends on which tire you are comparing. There are tradeoffs either way, but imo 16" provides no significant gains that any of us are going to notice when actually driving compared to a 17" rim.

Best of luck to the OP. Price doesn't sound too bad, but perhaps they can sweeten the deal a bit.

Yeah stock rack is great. Some dont use them all that much.

Can you even get 16s on a '13 w/o it being a TT?? Alloys are going to come with the Upgrade Package. They are lighter than steel ones anyways. I think the tire cover is automatically added as well...some things you just cant get rid of even if you want to.

The OEM hitch is the best hitch you can get. Not super fun to source the hitch, valance, and wiring at a later time. It also REALLY protects your OEM bumper offroad in the mean time. Again, not everyone immediately throws on an aftermarket rear bumper.

With that said, I think that is definitely a decent price and it sounds like we should be seeing you around real soon!!

Just like what That Guy said, just go for the TT. I haggled with two dealerships for mine. Mine came with the Tow Hitch, the ****ty carpet mats (not my choice. they were added already), and the TRD cat back system. I got it out the door for just over $32,000. Almost every TT I have seen has the tow hitch and either the carpet mats or the all weather mats, and either the CBE or the Exhaust tip. MSRP on all of them has ranged from $33,500 to about $37,000. I test drove an AT 4X4 with the JBL stereo and some bling that the dealer added and the TT. Fell in love with the TT. Looking at the options you want, go with the TT. And I'm sure if you ask anyone who has bought a 13 TT they will all agree. Just my $.02.

For the 2013 it looks like your stuck with 17' wheels unless you go the trail team route.

As for the rack though, the factory rack is useable and better than nothing. That said, if you have to pay more for it you might as well get a baja rack or Gobi for the same money. They are much better options and allow much more versatility.

Both of my TT FJ's cost me 33K and came with the tow package installed.
The problem with the factory tow option is that if you change rear bumpers to say an all pro or "insert random aftermarket steel or alum goodness" then you will need to purchase their hitch mount for it to work.

Dealers expect you to grow attached to the dream of that care they are trying to get you to buy. There are an aweful lot of FJ's out here for sale. Try not to get to attached to just one. Take your time and shop around. Hold your ground on the value of your trade and tell them if they want to make a deal then these are the numbers you will work with.

I can't tell you how I feel without knowing your trade. Are you trading in a 1985 VW Quantum wagon that books for $500 and the dealership is giving you $450?!

As for the price of JUST the FJ, I like the OTD price for all that you're getting. I however would NOT pay that price knowing what I know now about the WORTHLESS factory rack, tire carrier, carpeted mats, etc (as listed below). I would be happy with their OTD price, but have them take off those expensive/useless "stealer"ship upgrades. Then subtract those costs from your OTD price and you have a NEW OTD price.

Not a bad price. Try and get him up on that trade. Hopefully you will get it and you can join the club!! :bigthumb: Good luck.

The FJ's hold their values. Deals DO happen, but to get a TT for his $30K OTD price (once he gets rid of all the unecessary crap the dealer adds)... you'd be hard pressed to do.

Dealers sell at KBB and buy at NADA values. Why, you ask? Because KBB is inflated. So, when they buy at NADA prices and sell at KBB they have already given themselves a larger profit margin. Look at your used truck value on both sites and compare the costs. I have seen where the two sites are simular between vehicles, but (more often than not) vary by 15-20%.

My recomendations are:
1. Get the dealer/stealership to take off the junk you don't want. This will save you about $1K-2K.
2. Know if they are selling you the FJ from KBB or NADA. If they are selling from KBB, you need to bring in a print out of KBB's pricing for your trade.
3. If you don't end up completely happy with the deal- WALK AWAY! There will ALWAYS be another FJ out there with everything you want to make you happy.

Just my .02 though. Good luck, and post pics if you get it!

My trade is a 2007 Ford F150 Super Crew Cab w/62k miles.

Trade values: KBB - $20,565 and NADA is $20,550...both are very comparable.

THANKS for all the comments, suggestions and ideas - greatly appreciated.

UPDATE: The deal went south this afternoon, not because of anything I did, but because the on-duty sales manager nixed it. Manager #2 said that Manager #1 was out of line with accepting the OTD offer. Of course, Manager #1 was on a day-off so the three of us couldn't sit down and come to an agreement. Manager #2 offered me invoice @ $31,742 + tax + dealer + fees, etc. for a total of $33,923. MSRP is $33,923...and funny how the total of invoice + is the same as MSRP. So...I told him

Hi,
I bought mine from costco auto program.
The msrp was $35,178 and the sales price was $31,535.
I could not find anyone who would go lower.
The dealership was mountain states toyota. (Denver)
If you get a price from costco at least you have a place to start.
Good luck.

UPDATE: In my original post, I was working a deal with the local (Pueblo) dealer for an FJ that was sitting in a lot in Denver (he told me they do this often...arrangement with other dealers).

Yesterday I called Manager #1 and asked him to explain why the deal fell through. He called back and said he was sorry about the Denver FJ but wanted to know if there was any way we could work a deal on the remaining Magma FJ that was on the lot?

The one here in Pueblo has a manual and I was wanting an automatic. I said I'd listen. Bottom line is he agreed to sell me this one (I'll get over the manual :) ) for $30,230 - MSRP was $34,406. I had to give a little on the trade but that was why I went in shooting high on it. So, I guess by noon today I'll 'officially' be more than a lurker here on the forum. I love the pumpkin colored FJs!
