Hey ya'll. I just put a Daystar leveling kit on my 2WD FJ, 2.5" front, 1.5" rear. Not a huge lift or anything but i love the look. Anyway my question is, what do ya'll with experience think is the largest tire i can put on without body chopping? 285s? 295s? Again, I don't have the 4x4 if that makes a difference. And for that matter, what's the biggest tire you put on yours with STOCK suspension? Any help would be appreciated, as i'm trying to buy new wheels and tires asap

G'Day,
It all depends what you do with your J..
even 2wd can and do go off road, so are you hitting trails etc, or is it more for looks only?

The general rule of thumb is 287/70/17 will fit in an AT style tyre, but its not g'tee'd to fit.
But its complicated as you are finding out... and learning which is good...

Part of the equation is the rim, you mention tyres and wheels, so that implies you want to swap out the stock rim to something else, as well.

So, although you are in a hurry, take a breath and do some research.... and you will find the right combo for you...

If you want to play it safe look at a 275/70/17 AT tyre, and as for rims ... find one you like with the right offset to fit your J and your tyre.

If you want the tyre to stick out a bit further than stock do, make sure the wheel has less offset.

Good luck, and don't be afraid to ask questions

cheers
Baz

Generally 285/70R17 is the maximum on stock rims without spacers or a BMC.
Going much larger and adding spacers will cause issues.

If you're getting new wheels, decide on 16, 17, 18" rims. I'd probably keep it between 16-17 as the wheels are usually lighter amd easier to swap. Depends how much you want them to fit but 285/70 seems like the magic setup for 17". You should decide on the wheels first and then tire size can come into play. Not all wheels offer the correct size/offset you want, nor will the tire fit if the size and offset are off. Best to search and look at other people's wheel setups and see what you like.

And my 285/70/17's fit without rubbing even off-road. So that's why a 285/70/17 is not necessarily going to fit and a little controversial as to what fits without a BMC for sure.

As many have said you may be able to go with 285/70R-17. I went with Yokohama Geolandar GO15 285/70R-17 size on my FJ with Raceline Scorpion 17x9 +0 wheels and it rubbed, so I did the body mount chop and all is good. I personally like the look with 285/70R-17 tires.

Here is a review we posted to give you an idea as to how that size looks.

I realize this is crazy talk on this forum, but I recommend the BFG original Mud-Terrain in 255/75-17. They're 32.1" in diameter vs 32.7" for the 285/70-17. And remember, you only get the radius as ground clearance, so that's a whopping 0.3" difference. The BFGs can often be had at a good price as Rubicon take-offs on Craigslist, and Tire Rack is selling them for $154 ea (no affiliation). Just a thought.

285 rubbed hard at full lock and compression on mine stock rims. Did the BMC and no issues.
