No you can't. Mobil has a LSD additive in there oil. You can get trany oil from Redline 75w90 Gl4 synthetic which most of us have in our trany. You can use the Mobil in front and rear diff and in the T-case since those components don't care if the oil has LSD additive in them.

I'm having a hard time finding redline locally. Any other suggestions for another brand of manual transmission fluid? As I understand it, needs to be 75w-90 synthetic gl-4 or gl-5.

 

I had to order for my self over the web, since I couldn't get it locally and my only option was the Internet and it was worth the wait. MT90 is one of the best oil out there. There is no cutting corner when it comes to any manual trany. We have to go with the specs.

I ran the Mobil 1 in my MT for 30K without issue. I ran Royal Purple for 5K and would get a grind when hot going into 4th.

I now only run Redline MT90 and have over 105K on my trans.

 

after to speaking to a few mechanics/shops, 2 suggested I stick to the recommended oil per the manual, while the other two said 75w-90 mobil 1 could be used in the diff, transfer case, and manual transmission. they said that the front diff and manual tranny use the same, but the rear is usually thicker because it is used more. I then advised him that the '10 manual is full time 4wd, he then responded saying that the tranny could use the same oil.

my problem is that I have been to 4 different auto shops and can not find redline mt90. I was able to find mobil 1 75w-90. has anyone used this for their manual transmission? Is it merely a preference? or would using the same gear oil in the manual tranny cause problems?

 

I have had Royal Purple MT oil (synthetic) which does not have the LS additives. The bottles say "for Manual Transmission". If you use the other RP oil, its bot going to help the synchros and could cause occasional grinding.

I've had it for the last 20K miles and ts shifting very nice, the stick vibrates a lot less too.

 

Is the Royal Purple Syncromax good for the 6MT? I put RP in the front and rear diffs and have held off on the Transmission since i search and can not find a definitive answer.

I've been advised to not change the MT tranny fluid until closer to 60K miles (if that). You might want to research a little more before jumping on this.

From looking at your signature you have a 6 speed manual transmission. Therefore, you can change your transmission fluid anytime you want, it's very basic and simple in comparison the the automatic transmissions.

The manual transmission lube is gear oil - it's same stuff that's used in your transfer case, front and rear diffs!

Pesonally, I wouldn't wait 60,000 miles before changing the gear oil in transmission, it's too risky. If it were my truck I'd change it out (for first time) between 10,000 - 15,000 miles, max! and then follow the maintenance shedule for the remaining changes.

 

Got an 08 MT. Changed all my fluids at 5K using Amsoil Severe Gear 75w-90. Used this in all of the following: Tranny, Transfer, Front Diff, Rear Diff.

 

I wouldn't wait 60,000 to change the trany oil.

The manual and dealership recommend changing out fluids at 30k.

I took a look at my rear diff and the fluid looks VERY clean. Im a few thousand away from 30k, so im going to continue to shop around for either Amsoil, Mobil Delvac, and Redline. I cant find any of these in my local shops. Ive already tried 5 places!

Toyota wants $24 a quart for their Gear oil!!

 

Yours looks clean at 30k? I heard that some guys new mt fj had only 1600kms and the rear diff oil already turned black because the breakin period. My 2014 mt fj has 2500kms now, most are highway, I was gonna change out all the fluid. But maybe I should check it first to see if it's clean or not. No point to change a clean oil.
By the way, none here use royal purple 75w90? I heard that's the best oil.

 

Uhhhh... I'm at 82k without changing the oil. No problems as I'm just going off to what the dealer is telling me. I was about to do it but I decided not to. Hmmm.. Is there an official Toyota publication where it states that the MT's don't get world standard fluid?

I have run Mobil 1, Red Line, Walmart generic 75w-90 synthetic oil in my M-transmission. Presently I have the Amsoil product in there.

 

did you or have you noticed a difference in any of them? any problems? i feel like i would not notice anything unless is caused a problem like slipping.

 

I am not ready to change my MT oil just yet, but I'm reading up on how to do it.

Where are the drain and fill plugs located under the truck in relation to the transfer case plugs?

I'm a newb with most of this stuff. This is my first vehicle I've tried doing all maintenance on.

Just looking real fast, the drain looks like it is at the bottom of the transmission in the middle; and the filler located towards the rear of the tranny half way up vertically.

Which gear oil are you going to be using?

 

i bought the FJ used. there is a chance that the fluid might have been changed for the sale or by the dealership.

 

Not sure what you are looking for, but we routinely use AMSOIL Severe Gear 75/90 in the MT's from 2007 and up with no issues.

 

I have 80K on mine with mobile 1 not saying its correct but I have no issues and have ran it since new. I change it very 20K.

I have a 2014 manual transmission FJ cruiser.
I bought redline MT90 manual transmission oil, at the back says 75w90 gl 4.
Meet the require on the owners manual.
And I been searching on what is the best oil for fj MT, turns out royal purple might not be a good idea.
But motor oil from RP is really good after oil test from a lot of brands.
So I got RP 0w20 for motor, RP 75w90 Max gear (gl 4 or 5) for diff F/R and transfer case.
The 2014 calls for 75w85 gl5, but RP max gear should be fine, cuz at the back says it's for gl 5 or 4.
Why the F toyota change it to 75w85?
I don't know if it will void warranty or not by using RP max gear 75w90.

 

Dang I didn't know the oil on a manual trans was supposed to be changed every 20-30k miles, that sounds ridiculous short considering there is no torque converter slipping like an auto trans. I have 65k miles in mine, bought it used with 21k, and I haven't touched the trans fluid. I'll probably do it one of this days.
