Rear coils - advice needed for upgrade

I have a Toytec Ultimate kit fitted with thier standard rate rear coils. Happy with the ride but the back end is sitting down by an inch or two when loaded up for camping.

I didn't think I had a lot in the rear, dog in a crate, approx 65lbs, fridge, approx the same plus some recovery gear and a few bits. May be about to add an aux fuel tank which will add about another 130lbs to the rear.

I'm also about to add about 60 lbs to the front with a winch and aluminium bumper (bumper weighs about same as stock one.

I need to upgrade the rear springs to level the truck and give me back my lift height but don't want a hard ride or no flex.

Pleas your feedback on what you use would help a lot

Another option is to use a progressive or dual rate spring, ie MT's long travel springs or icon's overland springs.

Thanks for the replies. I'm definitely not going the spacer route. Airbags might be an option but I would prefer to find a spring that does the job. Not a heap of money just for springs and long term the best solution.

Thanks @DubstepPear I had a quick glance at Icons I'll check out both further.

My old rear springs would sag under load too. So I was surprised when my Pro Comp 3" kit rear springs didn't seem to sag under a full load, at least not that I could tell. They sit at 3" and have a nice ride (smooth over speed bumps) and good flex when off road. My impression was that they're somewhat of a heavier load spring since they actually sit higher than the fronts, but I don't have the numbers in front of me. Don't think you can buy just the rear but their cheap enough you could buy the kit, fire sale the fronts and still be ahead.

Sarah ... Replied to your PM but for everyone to see this is what I run:

I went with OME Heavy Springs in the rear (OME2898) ... I bought them through trdparts4u but other vendors have them as well like @PureFJCruiser

I also added 2 spacers above the springs on the driver side to eliminate driver side lean (OME150PR10). @PureFJCruiser Also has these.

I've run this setup for 3 years and love it. The ride is great with no trailer (fridge, tools+drawer, rear bumper with swing-out, 35" tire) and with a trailer tongue weight of 200lbs.

Yep that's done and we've had a chat too but I've purposely not angled this towards any choices I might or mighht not have made as I'd like others to tell me what they find works for them so I can work that into my choices.

I've noticed my Icon 2" rear springs are a tad softer than I'd like but ride great unloaded. My brother's 4runner has the Metaltech HD LT coils DubstepPear mentioned. (Metaltech now only sells the HD rate) I was surprised how good they rode without any weight in the back still, so don't be afraid of them if you think they might ride harsh unloaded. I'll be switching to them eventually. Good luck.

I have the metal tech rear coils and don't have an issue with the ride. I have noticed that the rear sits slightly higher higher then the front but they still flex really well off road. When the fj is full of gear and people the rear levels out. My fj last weekend.

Thanks gmurrell. The OME is a different code for the later FJ's but is one of those on the consideration list. Toytec have ruled out the HD version as not being up to the load....kind of them as I was about to order!

I'm leaning towards a 3" lift progressive spring from one of about 3 Icon, MetalTech or Radflo, as I think it will give the best ride and the weight will drop it to the 2" required.

Not trying to sway you away from the ICON 3" Overlands.... but you might do a search on problems with them. I don't remember who the other members that were having noise problems with them are, but I was one of them. Mine would make a metal to metal slapping noise when hitting pot holes in the road. I had the ICON +2s on before the Overlands and they just didn't handle the load that I carry on off road trips. I put Toy Tech's Super-flex 2.5 HD's on my FJ and they sit +3" when empty... They offer a great ride and handling when loaded and empty..... They sit a bit higher when empty than I wanted, but I am keeping them. I have to say that ICON has been very good to me and I have absolutely nothing but good stuff to say about the rest of my suspension. The noisy Overlands drove me nuts... and they had to go....
Good Luck!
Thanks for the feedback. Any idea how much weight you carry roughly in the rear?

All Pro has both a 2" and a 3.5" rear coil that are 15% firmer than stock.

Half Pint,
Every day carry is around 100 lbs.... Off road play day-s winter 300-400 lbs., Teaching Off Road driving class without commercial sized vehicles 425 lbs, commercial sized vehicles in class 625 lbs. These estimates are pretty close because I have weighed my typical equipment load outs... The ICON +2 is 15% firmer than stock and the Toy Tec Super-Flex HD is 25% firmer than stock. Hope this answers your question....

Cheers

Thank you. Very helpful and interesting as Toytec have advised against their HD spring based on my estimated 350lb rear end load. Though I was looking at the Icon Overland spring +3 to give me +2 loaded.

Perhaps you should talk to another person at Toy Tec. I am completely satisfied with the Super-flex 2.5 HD coil springs. I do increase the compression setting on my rear shocks when carrying 300+ pounds of equipment. My rear shocks are ICON 2.5 CDCV long travel. I do not have any sway bars on my vehicle either. I attached a picture.... a crappy picture of my FJ during a snow trip near my home. I had at least 350 lbs in it when this picture was taken. If you have a couple of days, I can take a before and after picture with measurements....

I run Icon Overland progressive rate springs and LOVE them! They are tamed and not harsh while I'm almost empty. Loaded down with all my gear, rtt, and dirtbike they only sag a couple of inches but handle the weight like champs! I upgraded from the Toltec Superflex 2.0 springs. You can go with Superflex HD 2.5 springs if you just want a but more load capacity.

Halfpint,

Solo and I are running the same 3" springs, he loads his rig up much more than I but I can tell you that I just recently switched out my 2" coils for the 3" overland ones and absolutely love them!!

Thanks all for your input and information. All very useful. I have made my decision and ordered the Icon Overlands...
