Yep that is the quote I got to have my Catalytic converter problems fixed on my 2007.

I need your suggestions on what I should do. I can't afford that much money.

What can I do on my own?

Need suggestions on parts, gaskets, labor time so forth and so forth.

I do know that I want a direct fitting replacement of some sort.

Maybe I should just sell what I have and up grade to a new exhaust system if replacing OEM is so expensive.

For the record Toyotatech1 was right when he told me not to waste my time and money on the O2 sensors. I am glad I only replaced one. I had already purchased it before I received his advice.

Are they replacing all of them? There are 3 and the front 2 are a part of each exhaust manifold. The dealer may be required to replace the entire manifold to get the front cat on each side...thus the extreme cost. I'd say try just replacing the rear one, which should be a couple hundred and see if you can pass inspection with just that.

First off, what is the quote for, what is bad ?

Also, check online used/scrap' stores for a better deal....

I would go with after market exhaust system. But either way you go remember that the factory catalytic converters are worth good money for scrap anywhere from a couple of hundred to several hundred dollars. Don't let them keep your old ones or you just paid them even more. There are websites to tell you how much there worth or call local scrap yard and give them the year make and model. They should be able to give you a price.

He made a post in your last thread go back and read over it because it might be helpful. Here's the number to the shop Tel: 1-760-877-4234. Keith is a really swell guy and I'm sure will be happy to answer any questions you have. And! They have a group buy going on right now for the exhaust so two birds with one stone. I believe when he posted in your other thread he had info on the group buy posted as well.

if you go aftermarket there is a good chance you will get your p0420, p0430 back if that was your issue or not . they are not made to the specs of factory cats. we get a few that last a year or two but most set cat codes in a week or two. and make sure they are c.a.r.b. compliant 50 state, basically californa emission or they might not work good enough and set the codes.

Come on guys, first of all according to Bandi's post and similar to my 2010 FJ there are only 2 catalytic converters, one per side! Also I doubt both are defective, but I guess the dealer is playing stupid and can't diagnose which one or if any are the real issue, so just how did they make that determination? Are they sure it's not an or both O2 sensors. It is possible to test the exhaust stream gases before the catalysts by removing the O2 sensors. Test the sensors for voltage output before removal, then test the exhaust gas at both sides and compare that to the exhaust gas out the tail pipe. You should be able to get HC and CO readings easily and possibly CO2 with a good sniffer. NOX is bit more difficult, but if your cats are working you will see a reduction in the HC/CO levels for certain.

I have a great solution which is very easy. It only takes 1-2 hours per side labor to change out those manifolds. Quite possibly the easiest manifolds on earth to install. The dealer books say to quote 8 or so hours, and that's how dealerships work, they quote out the book rate, and charge the book rate no matter how long it may take, even if they go over, in this case the tech would have to have an IQ lower than 65 to go over, or something would have to break, like a head stud or something.

So the easy solution is to install a set of JBA long tube headers, and o2 sensor simulators to kill the check engine light.

As far as the emissions testing. I cannot give you advice as to how to defeat a state emissions check, or how to do anything illegal. But I can tell you how to pass an off road racing emissions check, so take it for what it's worth......and read between the lines:)

If your racing sanctioning body only does a visual check and an obdII check you will pass with the headers no problem. The simulators will keep the check engine light off and the headers will remove the defective front cats, both items combined will be a permanent solution to this problem, and the price is the same or better than alternative solutions. Also, since your rear cats are still in place, you will pass the visual.

That said, if your racing sanctioning body does all of the above, and takes a sample of the emissions, like CA does, I've heard from very reputable sources that having long tubes and only the rear cats passes a CA smog check, but like I said, I would never do that:)

I would be happy to source all of the above recommended solutions for you.

JBA ceramic coated long tube headers are $450 and simulators are $134. You can do the headers yourself with a socket set and some wobblies.

For more detailed info just give me a call.

the only ones that are needed to be replaced and are monitored by the computer are the ones with the o2 sensor after them, unless the last in line is clogged up, so therefore you probably need everything all the way to the tailpipe, if that's the issue? I bet both manifold cats is what you need...

Steadybead just do yourself a favor and speak to Keith on the phone, he can school you on all things exhaust because apparently some of these guys here don't understand out fj layout.

Did some research on the testing done here in IL. This is from the Chicago Tribune:

"In January, Illinois initiated a new emissions test for cars from the 1996 model year and newer. Forget the dynamometer (treadmill) exhaust emissions test. The new test involves checking your gas cap, looking at the check-engine light and plugging a device into your car's diagnostic link.

In most cases, your car will pass unless the check-engine light is on when you pull into the test facility. However, if your car does not pass this test, you can no longer opt for the fallback exhaust test; you must take your car in for repair.

Not sure about Illinois but if you're going the aftermarket headers route keep in mind a lot of states also do a visual inspection to check for any aftermarket parts associated with catalytic converters. If that is the case you can pass the OBDII scan but still fail the inspection.

I'll be in this situation next week. My car is running a 3'' exhaust with a single cat instead of two and it's tuned to prevent a CEL. It's passed twice in two different states but I still get nervous. All it takes is a tech poking his nose under the car and it can fail. I've even been asked if the car was modified--I said yes, lots of suspension and brake work. :lookaround:

My build date is 04/07. Can't wait to talk to the service desk today. If I am covered that would be great. Once again I am a little surprised the service desk didn't ask me about the buy date or the milage when I was on the phone with them.

Thank you everyone on here that has helped me so much. You maybe just saved me 2300.00. We will see....
