I'm sure many of you know a person that insists you aren't patriotic because you bought a Toyota. A Foreign car. Why don't you buy American? I would never buy anything but American. What a bunch of crap. I hate when this argument is brought up , because it makes no sense. So for those of you that know that "special" person that busts your chops about buying American, send them this article

To bad FJ dont Apply, Made in Japan, besides in todays spoiled world of the UAW it should be more like Made by UAW or Not.

so Happy they havnt gotten there poisen into toyota yet, But its coming I am afraid

Why do you think US Toyota plants would unionize? I would guess that the majority of their workforce is okay with being non union, since they earn wages very similar to UAW workers and don't have to deal with union dues and the attached bureaucracy.

Yes, funny...

"Funnier still" I think is this - an example of the company I work for...

An American manufacturing company in Southern California

"Proudly made in America,
Under English ownership,
From imported raw materials,
On Japanese equipment,
By Mexican laborers."

I don't have an issue with American versus Japanese cars but I certainly hope we don't cause further growth in China and India by worshiping the cracker boxes they will be trying to shove onto out shores. Further growth there means increased demand for raw materials which means really high prices on any metal products.

I do my best when shopping for anything from tools for the shop to office supplies to help support our economy. Sure it cost a little extra but it would make a big difference if everyone would do it. PS, I also avoid Wal-Mart for the most post. Did you ever happen to notice that when they abandoned their "Made in the USA" marketing slogan, that was about the same time China's growth went through the roof ?

I have gotten this from friends, co-workers and even a Ford salesman. They call them "Jap" cars and they seriously do get angry that I spent my hard earned money on a foreign car. I've never EVER gotten such backlash until this past year.

I recently purchased a Nissan Titan Pro4x and boy, I'm getting a bunch of this "what you can't support USA? You go and support a Jap company?!" or "In these times you should be buying a Ford or Chevy/GMC!!!! What the F is wrong with you"

wow... never ever have I heard such things until this year.

Most of the american public believes what salesman say about the car there looking at to purchase, they need to start looking at contents of the vehicle
and where the parts are from. Buying American is all in how you look at it.

The main reason I posted this is because I had an employee that told me he would never buy a Toyota because it wasn't American. I asked him if he knew that all of his truck was made in America. Of course he danced around it and then said yes. I told him he better go check his facts because of all the parts not made here in his truck. Then he hold me if he bought a new car he would check to make sure it was all made here. I asked him how he would know and he said he would visit the factory it was made in. Going along with his stupidity, I asked him if he just had visited the factory that his wife's newly purchased car was made in and of course he couldn't have because its in Detroit and he didn't have time off for that . By the way.. his wifes purchase didn't even come close to the list on the article. He doesn't work for ma anymore, but I was tempted to send him this article.
Its just good to have in situations where sense isn't of abundance.

Yeah, there are just way too many components in any one vehicle to find one that is 100% made in the USA. At least the foreign companies are actually manufacturing vehicles in the US rather than just shipping them here from overseas. I've got no problem with that at all. It shows that we are still capable and they are still confident that we are capable of manufacturing their products.

This is true not only of American vehicles, but of foreign ones as well. In this day in age, there's no such thing as a 100% American made car.... Or 100% Japanese car....or German, French etc. It Might be built in a said country, but does not necessarily mean its 100% from that country.

I am as patriotic as they come but when UAW and General Motors price them out of the market. The build quality and dependability are not there and then they take all of that money given to them and still cant make it, these are clues of a dying business. I owe no allegiance to an American made company just to buy American. I work for my money and I will spend it on the best product I can afford. The American dream is based on the fact that you are allowed to be as successful as you can be and it comes with the risk of failure. When the goverment wont allow certain companies to fail it destroys the basic principal elements that made our country what it is. The fact that the FJ is built in Japan is a good thing. Their employees take pride in doing the best job they can do their driven to produce a quality product because it is engrained in their culture not a union mandate. When the goverment subcidises auto manufactures then there is no reason to compete for new or inovative business ideas. I do not see us running to buy Russian cars. I will say that I am proud of Ford.

Sorry about the rant.

Profit is a much smaller part of this than it would seem. It's about jobs, companies making the parts, employees of those companies, sales at the dealership level, service, parts, Taxes etc.
I hardly think profit had anything to do with the 50 billion that GM just got. Ohh and we can't forget the UAW, they get a big chunk too.

Try living in Canada and buying products Made in Canada. Good luck.

All I would have is bottles of Maple syrup, Baccon, soap stone carvings, Canadian Polar Ice diamond(if I could afford it) something from Bombardier.

I have to look at what is the best value for me, not where it is made.

That's not true! The best winter coat is still made right here in Montréal by Kanuk (seriously! -25C + windshield walking the dog and I was sweating!). You also have a very healthy 3D animation / special effects, film and game industry.

But yeah, you're right, it's getting harder and harder to get good Canadian product... We too often sell our raw material instead of selling a higher value / refined product...

I do my best to spend my money locally first and I will only buy the best where I can.

I was all over that I asked him about the plasma TV he had and all the other things you mentioned. He said of course he had to buy foreign because the US doesn't manufacturer TV's . Instead of challenging that I told him maybe he shouldn't have a TV then. He is a very narrow minded individual . I am sure some of you hear this type of this crap, in on manor or another .

I don't know if this is still the case but about 5 or 6 years ago a Honda Accord was the most American vehicle you could get when broken down percentage wise. When Chevy, Dodge, and Ford can make a vehicle that is as reliable, looks as good, and has the resale value of a Toyota I'll buy it. For now I'm only buying from the big three. The big three being Toyota, Honda, and Nissan.
