I am gutting my (inner) front fenders (wheel wells) and I want to have them rhino lined for protection. I know that there is a DIY herculiner that parts stores have, I have never used such a product. Are they any good? I figure its a simple enough I might as well give it try. Any opinions?

Idk what name brand your getting, but my friend sprayed all his plastics on his Xterra:)cowfrown:) and its all flaking off after about 3 months. He sanded all the plastics and everything and it didn't stick well. But metal it works great! But Ferby got his bushwackers rhino lined professionally and they look Amazing!!! So I say for plastics take it to a pro!

I had my stuff professionally done and its my favorite mod to date. But I'm with FredtheFJ that doing it yourself stuff doesn't hold up against wear or powering washing. Dave (man) did his front bumper and a power washer removed it in areas. It should only cost a couple hundred to have it done professionally. IMO that cost isn't bad if you look at the time spent + buying the supplies.

Right, thats kind of what I was figuring. I know the rhino liner on my truck bed is 11 years old and still is holding up which is amazing considering the punishment it has taken. I figured it would be worth it to look into the DIY option but I will just do it right and have it done by the rhino liner place. Now the only question is do I want black or paint matched wheel wells :D

Why are you rhino lining or linexing the inner fender wells? Those are some rather expensive options for a material that manufacturers have been using for years for sound deadening and rust prevention on inner fenders.

I don't know of too many off the shelf versions but it is a very tar like material that goes on pretty thick.

The front wheel well has a lot of plastic, and I had to do some tweaking of it and the metal to fit my tires. Rather then leaving it like it is now I rather have it all rhino lined and then I am going to go back and expoxy in decent rubber material to function as a splash guard since the wheel wells are as sealed as a a bucket full of holes. I wont have to worry about rust either then. The rear wheel well is fine as is and wont be touched. Besides my front wheel well doesn't have the spray foam like crap the rear wheel well has.

It's all about the prep on steel... I did the Dupli-color with Kevlar a couple years ago and this stuff does not budge. If I had it all to do over again the only thing I'd change would be to skip the Kevlar. It's a very chunky uneven dispersion of the stuff which does not look so good. I'd have been fine without the stuff. When I got it, for some reason I thought the Kevlar would be more of a powder in the liner. Oh well, I've always been a function over form guy anyway. Wife and I got out and did both ours at the same time. Sanded the sides and used alcohol to wipe them down before applying. Mine has survived wheeling and scrapes and the such from bush/trees. Hers does well with shopping carts and doors :)

What do you guys think of using the U-Pol Raptor Liner to line the white roof? What is your advice on how to manage where the roof rack attaches to the roof?

Zeus hit it on the nail! Material prep. You spend 3 x more time prepping a surface than it takes to paint/ coat it. Most bed liner companies will sand all areas 1st to give the material something to grip onto. Then wipe every square inch down with grease and wax remover to ensure nothing causes it to separate. Then primer to etch the surface and allow a solid surface for the liner to grab onto.

The reason some blasted off while pressure washing as posted above could be traced back to prep. I'm willing to bet the surface either had some silicone product (wax/ tire gloss) or grease from servicing. You would be surprised how little of either of those contaminants would cause an issue. I used to detail all the cars at this one body shop and they would shut down painting during the lunch hours since the Burger King down the road had stacks that would send out enough grease, it would cause the paint to fish eye. It took too long to reprep cars before rolling them into the paint booth. Waiting a few hours and painting between lunch and dinner rush saved them tons of time of redos

I had a ton of trail rash and dents so i had to decided wether to paint or Linex after getting quotes for both the linex was less than 50% than the cost of a paint job. Mostly because of the less time it takes to prep.

It only added about 40lb to the total weight of the truck and i love it. No more scratches and it draws a ton of attention heaps of people compliment me on my truck.

I saw a Jeep Linexd all sand it looked AWESOME!! i was a little jealous but i love my all black... no regrets

With the way they spray the linex they have trouble doing doorsills ect... so whatever color you had before will show there... My FJ was originally black so it blends in well

Wow! With all those decals, you might as well have linexed the rear windows!
Lol... i've been thinking about removing them but most of them tell a story of a place visited on many miles driving around the country.

I used Rustoleum BedCoating in a rattle can on my hood about three years ago. It had some serious chips in it when I bought, so I figured pay to have it repainted now, or use the rattle can now and see how long you can wait to paint it later. Still looks great and is not "chunky" at all. I'd do my roof with that, but that's a lot more area. Not sure I want to take on the work! I have a Gobi Stealth on top, so I am not overly concerned about whether the paint is perfectly even like I was on my hood.

I started with tan just to try it out, but it was difficult to make consistent. I have the black now and it is perfect. You cannot tell where the deep big chips were (I did sand and primer that area). I just sanded the rest of the area a bit.

looks better black, Detonador ... I think that's next on the "to do" list for me ... I'm tired of looking at touch-up paint that looks like a kid's pimply face ...
