Oil Capacity with Oil and Filter change?

I've change my own oil for 30+ years and have never been more confused. I've read the oil capacity for the FJ is 6.4 quarts and also 5.5 quarts when changing oil and filter. I changed the oil and filter with Amsoil 5W-30 and ea057 filter and added 6.0 quarts but can't get a clear reading on the dipstick and now I am afraid I have over-filled it. From those with experience, what is the actual oil capacity when changing the oil? If it should only be 5.5, do I need to drain half a quart to be safe? Thanks!

Engine Lube:

Oil Capacity (drain and refill)

Litres with filter 5.2

Quart with filter 5.5

Imp with filter 4.6

Without changing the filter:

Litres 4.9
quart 5.2
Imp 4.6

The dipstick is hard to read with clean oil.

I measure exactly what I put in and have done all my own oil changes .

You also might really wanna change your rear diff fluid pretty quick also.

I went with Royal purple in the rear diff .

Oh and Hi

When I drained mine, it was about 5.2-5.3 quarts.

When I switched to the Mobile 1 filter which is much larger, I had to put in 6 quarts.

Welcome Frog,

Rough up your dipstick with some steel wool or emery cloth (make sure you wipe off the particles obviously) and you will see your oil line better.

I just changed to Amsoil 5W30 (ASL) and an Ea057 oil filter and added 5 qts. flat and my oil level is just below full.

I've never seen 6.4 qts published anywhere for the FJ.

5.5qt? Hmmm.. I usualyl put Mobile 1 synthetic and a mobile 1 filter I put 6qta exactly. No problems. I also saw on my stcker that my toyota dealership put in 6qts.... hmmm this gets me thinking...

If everyone is using the same sized filter I don't understand why some folks FJs take 5.5 qts to fill and others take 6.0 qts.

I usually drain my oil when it's still pretty warm (althought I have done it when it was cold as well) but I just dump it and put the plug back in. I don't leave the plug out for long periods of time. That might make a difference.

I know if I use the largest filter that will fit instead of the small stock filter, the larger filter holds 0.6 qts. more oil.

I use the smaller M1 filter with M1 5w30 synth.
About 5.5q brings the oil level up to the bottom of the safe range on the dipstick. I usually end up putting in 5.5q to 5.75q. It's not something that I kill myself over.

My '14 6MT comes in FRI, and I want to run the largest Amsoil filter I can. What is the filter number and do these tools fit that filter? Thanks Guys.

I changed the oil in my 2013 FJ and I read in pg. 513 of the maintenance manual that it is 6.4 qts. to replace it. However my FJ has been driving and handling like garbage. Now I have no idea how to fix this!

What idiot wrote the wrong information in the manual? I have no idea what to do aside from overpay to have a mechanic fix my mess and hope nothing I did permanently damaged it. I also have no idea what the proper inflation pressure is for my tires. I have never seen so much conflicting and confusing information everywhere I look. Five days and 50 websites later I’m still lost on oil changes!

The tire pressure label is always on the B pillar or in the case of the FJ on the front of the drivers side rear door edge. It's in a similar location on every vehicle.

If you drain the oil after just being shut off, there will be oil still on all the engine parts that hasn't dripped back to the oil pan. This is especially so if the engine is not up to operating temps. Colder oil is thicker and takes longer to drip back into the pan. That's why the manual says to check your oil after re-filling.

How far above the top fill line is your oil?

You'd really have to overfill it to do any damage. The FJ is designed as an off-road vehicle. As such, the engine is designed to operate at angles encountered in off-roading so the oil level changes constantly when off-roading.

If the engine is not running properly or handling well you likely have something else going on.

You don't say what's acting weird or anything so there's not much to go on. Are you absolutely sure you drained the engine oil and not the transmission? Others have made that mistake and had problems.

5.5 quarts with stick size filter. Larger filter prob holds almost a quart or a quart. But basic oil change with filter in 07 FJ is 5.5 qts with filter change.
Newer FJ models with same 4.0 v6 have larger oil pans. That’s why you are seeing 6.2 and 5.5 qts. 😉. Then again. You all might know this by now. 😆.
