Seat Belt Recall - With Pics

I was lucky enough to get some pics of my FJ completed with the new bracket installed. I still do have some concerns, of which I am going to contact Toyota....I have a feeling they will brush them off and not care what I have to say. But the tensioner coming loose or breaking the tabs it is attached to will probably, not happen.

If you could care less of my opinion, dont read any further or bash me, this is only my opinion, and anyone who is smarter than me please let me know.
:soapbox:

Attached are my pics, and the one with the ruler shows how close the added bracket comes to the seat belt, about half an inch..in my opinion it is too close to the seat belt. I think this edge will cause chaffing to the seat belt eventually leading to complete failure of the seat belt under tension. As these vehicles are designed for offroad, the bouncing, jarring and motion will cause the seat belt to move and contact the metal edge of the bracket.

I think the clearance was about 3/4 inch. I didn't measure it.

Lego- It looks rounded at the edges in one shot then with your scale it looks like a direct edge?

In their defense- they figured the plastic coated wire above the new guard would defend the belt
I ran my finger across the edge where my scale it at, the way they manufacutred the plate, it is stamped with the really sharp edge pointing into the door frame. But the edge toward the seat belt could be softer(more rounded off). But that plastic coated wire above the new guard does look like it would help a little.

So are they replacing the tensioner as well? My Japanese isn't as good as it use to be
No tensioner is replaced, they just add the black metal bracket to stiffen the surrounding mounting pints. Image attached below.

Does anyone know if they are replacing the actual seat belt with this fix or just using old seat belt with new bracket?
Old seat belt with new bracket.

Toyota probably thought most would be picking up kids at soccer so they didnt worry about off road- this is why they are killing this truck- they can makes its seat belts work :lol:

thanks for the pics OP.

To bad Toyota won`t supply the owner with the brackets to install. Yeah I know, they couldn`t sign off on the recall then.

I`m sure the recall police won`t be after us if we don`t do this immediately.

I`m wondering just how many FJ doors failed/cracked that warranted this action. also wonder what time frame, age of vehicle, and mileage this failure occurs at.

maybe people just should stop slamming the doors... that`s to easy...

I went down to my dealership and ask them for the parts and they wouldn`t give them to me either. After seeing the pictures I wonder if its even worth getting this done.

I don`t slam any of my doors so I would bet money that they are fine. :)

That's what it said in the instructions above

You no slam door like ape! You break!

:D

Huh. I translated it as "What you looking here for, round eye?"

:jester:

I received the letter from Toyota that the recall was pending--the repair wasn't prepared yet. Thanks to the OP for keeping the FJ family updated! :bigthumb: Now its time to go thump my dealer to get mine fixed before I kill myself....

part of me says, why bother, the other part says if something ever happened I'd kick myself forever ... by the time the fix gets up here the world supply of steel will be exhausted so maybe its all academic ...

Per the remedy notice I received yesterday: "Based upon the inspection, in limited cases, the seat belt retractor(s) and/or access doors(s) may be replaced."

Emphasis on access doors

From what I understand about safety recall notices, they stay in effect for 10 years once filed with the NHTSA.

I`m wondering just how many FJ doors failed/cracked that warranted this action. also wonder what time frame, age of vehicle, and mileage this failure occurs at.
This is the Twilight Zone in that I've read here that someone said the dealership where they work is the one that got the ball rolling on this because someone noticed it (to that effect), and another said there was a known collision where the mounting failed. The reality is the discovering of the failure by a dealership, per the notice filed by Toyota to the NHTSA...

http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/acms/cs/jaxrs/download/doc/UCM435220/RCDNN-13V098-8734.pdf

...where it appears someone took their truck to a dealership complaining of a detached mechanism.

For those late to the party, here is what Toyota will do upon inspection...

http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/acms/cs/jaxrs/download/doc/UCM436565/RCDNN-13V098-4321.pdf

There are no listed events (that I can find) on the NHTSA site where in an accident the current mounting failed, causing serious injury or death, prompting this recall. It's still listed as voluntary by Toyota and not mandatory by the NHTSA.

Well I'll be removing mine and conducting a thorough MPI of the metal and see if any cracks have propagated.

It doesn't show it these vehicles had been involved in accidents, had these removed for installation of stereo equipment, etc. I find this hard to believe the metal would fatigue from slamming a door... I'd believe they had an issue with slamming the brakes and the lock up mechanism was pulled.

To make it a voluntary recall means the NHTSA doesn't have to perform an evaluation of the parts to see if they are defective in material composition. This keeps it clean and in house

My dealership picked mine up and brought it back to me, so I have no idea how long
